yeh,me too. I bought a usb card reader, plugged the memory card into it and moved the files over that way...I didnt care for the way the cable plugged into the 5D mrk IV anyway....de k2lck Ed

Why not just remove the card from the camera, then, and just stick it directly into the PC? … Saves a step!

the card reader is a great animal to have, and the computer [laptop] only reads one type of card, the card reader reads 6 types..[i counted 'em]...the 5 mk IV accepts 2 sizes of cards and is smart enuff to go t the other when one is full , but to answer your question Chris, I didnt know the port was even there on the laptop...GBG... Ed - just read the emblem on top of the SD card port on my PC … know how many it takes? … SIX!!!!

The same port is on all laptops, but since they're so thin, they're not labeled, the way they are on PCs.

I have also never used a cable to the camera. Always use a card reader, either built in to the laptop or on USB. Just started to have a problem with my built in card reader on a SDXC card not being found. Bought a card reader that said specifically for SDXC fixed the problem.

I too find it easier to just use the card reader you computer came with or to buy a card reader rather than digging up the cable that the camera came with and hooking up the camera body.

Exactly, Bear … what's the matter with the card reader built into every modern PC? (laptops included.)

If you always keep your USB cord (which came with the camera) in the camera's own bag, there's really not a problem, digging it up - is there? … Just unzip the pocket, and there it is - right, Bear?

I have a Canon 5D Mark III camera that I have had no problems in the past connecting to my Dell computer and downloading photos. Then all of a sudden a week ago - the computer quit recognizing the camera was attached. My EOS Utility program that downloads my photos from my camera to my computer no longer recognized my camera was connected and in my computer settings my camera was no longer recognized as being connected. I have uninstalled my EOS Utility several times - hoping this was the problem - but to no avail. I even downloaded the program from the Canon website - but it still doesn't work. Thinking it might be a driver, (I checked my shutter count on my camera with a site someone had suggested on this forum - and had to change a driver), I reinstalled a driver for the EOS Utility program from the Canon website - but that didn't work either. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions to try - please help. (And no comments about it being a Dell and not Apple either, please:-) Thank you for any suggestions. Oh yes, my camera is able to download photos using my laptop with the EOS Utility - so I don't think it is my camera??? I have also changed connecting cords and that doesn't help either.

This may be a dumb question, but have you rebooted the computer? It's the universal fix for the inevitable odd Windows problem. Best method is to disconnect the camera, reboot, and then reconnect the camera. Good luck! >Alan

Why not use an SD card reader. I’ve never connected any camera to my computer and never had an issue with my very cheap multi card reader.

Excellent suggestion. That's the way I do it. Eliminates variables. >Alan

============

Yup!

I use a "Transcend" - multi-card reader. Then copy the "files" (photos) to wherever I Want. I also send copies to another portable H.D. for safe keeping.

I'd suggest this;
1) try a different USB port on your computer.
2) use a card reader and connect to the same port on your computer
Since camera worked with a different computer it seems 99% plus that its either the cable your using or the USB port on your computer. You may want to examine the computer port carefully with a small flashlight. I have seen broken USB connectors before.

OR - just use the multi-card reader slot, built into every modern PC ….

Try turning your comp off and rebooting.

Since the camera worked with the cable on a different computer it seems 100% sure it’s not the cable.

If it works with one machine but not the other, what is the difference?

Operating system
Software version

It's probably one of those two things. I would probably call Canon if it was me.

Another possibility, the driver for that camera may have become corrupted. Try deleting it, and restart the computer. Restarting should force it to reinstall the driver. That was the solution for a problem I had with the CD drive on my laptop once.
