Art lenses are premium lenses of excellent optical quality sold by Sigma. I own the 60mm f2.8 Art for use with my Olympus cameras and indeed its optics are excellent. I use it often for family portraits.

The laws of physics apply equally to every brand lens. The bigger lenses will (tend to) have more sharpness and less distortion, especially once you get away from the center of the lens, and once you get the aperture wide open. The bigger lenses also tend to produce better color, because they (usually) use additional elements to adjust for chromatic aberration (which can otherwise make your image colors look a little flat).

Having said that, the "nifty 50" prime lenses for Canon and Nikon (I haven't tried the Sony FE) are very good lenses and are smaller and cheaper than the Sigma Art 50mm 1.4. The Sigma is a very good lens, but you would be hard pressed to look at the resulting pictures and say which one was which.

It's just a advertising slogan, they really do not differ from other lenses!

That is a biased and unhelpful response.

Yes, really, English please. I keep seeing "Lense" and instantly think "French", "German". I have photography books going back well before I started doing photography in the seventies from the forties and I never remember seeing this alternate spelling before joining UHH.

OH boy, you sound like my 5th grade teacher, her second most favorite thing besides correcting everything in the world of English was her big fat RED PEN, boy, did she like to use that BIG RED FAT PEN. Maybe your messages would look better in RED.

Sigma introduced their "Global Vision" marketing program a few years ago and as they have redesigned lenses for upgrades or added new models have gradually been classifying each new model into one of three categories:

"Contemporary"... Affordable, lighter weight, general purpose lenses.
"Sports".... Lenses optimized for speed and durability.
"Art"... Lenses optimized for image qualities such as bokeh and color rendition.

They also still offer a number of "other" lenses. Many or all these are simply designs that have been in production for a while haven't yet been revised and re-categorized yet. This doesn't necessarily mean that they aren't just as good and capable as the lenses that have already been added to one of the above categories.

There can be or already are both DC (crop only) and DG (full frame capable) lenses in all four types.

If we were to correct every grammar error here (on the forum), though, we’d never have time to do anything else!

And spelling errors!

Non-Issue. We are not trying to correct every grammar error here.

I research any lens I am looking to buy to extremes. After reading damn near everything on the net, about the Sigma 50 mm Art, The Canon 50 mm L. I bought the Tamron G2 45 mm. For me the label Art, was not worth the extra money

I own 3 different Sigma ART series lenses, including the 50/1.4. That lens is particularly good and I have no issues with it focusing or anything else. I consider it much much better than the Nikon 50/1.4G that it replaced. In this case, the Sigma lens is considerably more (2X) as expensive as it's Nikon counterpart and well worth its price. The only downside, IMHO, is the additional weight. I also own the Sigma ART 135/1.8, which I also like quite a bit and has no Nikon equivalent. The final Sigma ART lens that I own is the 24-105/4 which I consider more than decent, but a bit on the heavy side as well. Normally, I do prefer Nikon glass and own a large collection of it, but I'm willing to make some exceptions upon occasion. I rely on my own judgement to determine which lenses are meant for me, based upon my own actual use. Best of luck.

So have you used the Tamron long enough to form an opinion on it?

Yes, I realize that...and I certainly make enough spelling errors of my own. I know you think I’m perfect, but, honestly, I’m not. Each time I see bad grammar it makes me twitch...then, when I can’t stand it any more, I am compelled to offer a correction.
