I was the victim of the Barcelona street theives and discovered that my homeowners insurance covered the loss, but the homeowners deductible Reduced the reimbursement a fair amount. I now have a photo equipment rider with USAA. I had to identify all major equipment by serial number and even posted photos of them in my on-line policy file. There is no deductible now, and I feel a lot better.

Let's hope you never have to use it, but it you do, remember to file a police report if you are the victim of a thief. The insurance company doesn't care what language it is in. It's a good idea to take a list of th covered equipment with you when you travel, so the police report contains the equipment loss details. That way you can file it with the loss report, which will help with the insurance company, as they would like demonstrable proof that the loss occurred.

If you make any money thru photography, then get an "Inland Marine" policy as Homeowner policies won't pay if they find out you use your gear commercially. Many won't cover professional gear period... Of course, that gear is the OEM's top of the line products, which most shooters here don't have.

where would I look for insurance to protect myself from theft while on a road trip?

I added a rider to my State Farm policy for camera gear for amateurs. Covers any loss, breakage, repair. Replacement is at your original cost, no depreciation. Very reasonable premium.

Check your home insurance for coverage.

And if the basic policy does bot cover it, then most companieswill sell you a rider exclusively for the camera gear.

Call your home insurer and ask for a rider. I have a permanent rider on all my photography equipment, It covers replacement for damage, theft, ... It is not really that expensive.

Check with your home owners insurance company. Mine will cover it.

Thank you for all of your responses. I will be checking with my home owners insurance, and possibly my auto insurance to see what is available to me.

I have had a rider on my State Farm Homeowners policy for 25 years.
It is value bracketed so you pick which one you fit in.
The cost varies according to how much deductible you can absorb.

Several others have pointed to your homeowners insurance. A step further would be to contact your agent about any special additions could be obtained. If your gear is extensive and expensive, special coverage might be worth your while.

I have USAA homeowner's and auto insurance and a separate policy for my camera gear because the homeowner's policy has a $100 (or it actually may be higher now) deductible, and last time I checked it did not cover camera equipment anyway, so I have the separate USAA policy for that (used to be called "PAF") and it covers all my equipment from cameras, flashes, filters, bags, SD cards, etc. You have to list the under $100 items with the cameras for them to be covered.) Of course, you have to be eligible to get USAA policies (active duty or retired military personnel, both officers and non-coms, or their spouse or child). I have had USAA insurance on everything since 1965 and have never even thought about any other insurer as they are great to work with for both claims and other service. I have used the policy on my camera equipment a few times -- anything from having dropped a camera and getting a replacement or replacement value, to losing a filter and getting the replacement value for that. They never ask for receipts and take your word for value or loss. Costs about $90/yr. and I think my current coverage is for about $3,000 worth (replacement value) of equipment after you add up all the individual items.

I'm going to Italy this summer and I called my insurance broker and she said that I was covered unto $5,000.00 even if stolen in Italy. You would need a police report.

Did you check on any deductible? Most H/O policies have deductibles, anywhere from say, $100 to $500 per item or per occurrence. And you really should read your policy to see if the info your broker gave you was correct -- they have been known to make mistakes, which has led to litigation between insureds and insurers (I know because I have handled several such cases).

I have a rider on my Liberty Mutual policy. It is for replacement value - no deductible. I must present a bill for the value of each item. I have approximately, $14,000 covered. It cost around $120 per year. Every time I purchase additional equipment I email a copy of the bill. If I sell an item, I notify them to eliminate that item from coverage. I have my laptop and media drives covered too.

State Farm offers a separate policy, which covers anything on your equipment. I supplied a list of equipment, serial numbers and value. Basically, your cost is about $1.60 per thousand per month. I pay $177 for the year. No deductible. Home Owners policy will only cover so much.
