where would I look for insurance to protect myself from theft while on a road trip?

You need to search the archives! My recommendation is not to use your home owners' insurance for several reasons.
Insurance companies are not known for treating those who claim frequently for small amounts, kindly. A history of claims can affect the saleability of your home and quotes from other companies etc.
My recommendation is to use a separate Personal Items policy. The one I have is from State Farm at $13.50 per $1,000 per annum. It is all risks except the usual, (war, government seizure etc), and is a no deductible, replacement policy and not a discounted value one.
I have had one occasion to make a claim after dropping a lens while on vacation and their service was stellar. They researched the Canon repair process sending me the step by step process. They also authorized insured professional, overnight packing and shipping - at their expense.
They also sent a check for the estimated repair cost as soon as I sent it to them. The agent also kept in touch to ensure everything was proceeding smoothly.

You might be able to add a rider to you home owners insurance policy to specifically cover camera equipment thefts or losses, check with you insurance company.
If you want to purchase insurance to cover drops or damage you might want to with companies that provide insurance for damaged as well as theft insurance coverage, there are a couple of companies that offer this insurance Hill & Usher, Hiscox, and if you become a PPA member they provide camera equipment insurance as well as professional liability coverage.

You almost certainly can. However this is solved in one stroke and without associating any claims with your Home Owners' policy by using the approach I suggest above.
