Check your home insurance for coverage.

Your homeowners insurance first to see if it covers theft while traveling.

As mentioned above, check your policy for "Off Premises Theft" coverage.

Next check to see if there are any coverage limits for the "Off Premises Theft" coverage, or specifically for "Camera Equipment".

If you are a professional, all bets are off. In that case check your business policy.

I have a rider on my homeowners with USAA. Covers everything for any mishap, theft etc. Check with your homeowners insurance company.

Generally a rider on your home owners. However some other places offer it too.

Here is the link (after the ad) for an article about it in Popular Photography.

i carry a number of riders on my home insurance for "damage, fire, water, theft. each component of my outfits are listed separately. that pretty much takes care of all of it.

In some states you cannot get standard homeowner's insurance through the usual channels due to hurricane risk. In Florida we USED to have a great State Farm policy with which I had a personal property rider to cover camera equipment. State Farm pulled out of Florida and now we have insurance that does not offer any personal property riders. There is a professional photographers association that I found through which you can get insurance, but their membership (which offers other benefits to professionals) costs $300 per year as I recall - plus buying the insurance - so it isn't worth it for me. I would be interested in checking out any other independent insurance options.

I have All State insurance and a added policy to cover my photo equipment. I had to list each item and SN as well as price. I used B & H pricers and they accept that. I have had it for several years. Only needed it once when I broke a lens and they paid me after I had it fixed at Canon.

Homeowner's insurance often provides for a rider and schedule to list camera equipment. You will pay more for replacement cost type coverage, but it's worth it. You might want to consider just paying the annual fee and keep your gear safe all the time. There are policies for professionals that include "loss of use" and other bells and whistles, and will cover rental costs if your equipment is damaged, etc. But the cost will be correspondingly higher.
