I use a Macbook Pro (c. 2010) and need an external drive to backup my photos. I'm looking for some suggestions and couldn't think of a better place to go than UHH.
Enter your Q into the SEARCH and you'll find many references to back up solutions.
Get two 3T or 4T hard drives and set them to Raid 0. With a MacPro, you're talking about an exterior setup.

jpanar's scheme is the best way for you to go. You can rebuild your system if one of the redundant drives dies. Your 2010 machine probably is equipped with USB 2.0 and Firewire. For extra bucks you can get external drives with a Firewire interface that can be daisy-chained. You can use Disk Utility to set up your RAID.

Retail. One was my favourite fabric store, the other one an office supply store. The third one, with the staff locked out without notice, I don't recall, but it sure made headlines in the newspapers.
And yes, the same could happen to companies offering on-line space as well.
Perhaps not. This is one of those rare situations where the fine print wors FOR us. If a business uses an online backup service, the service is contractually required to let you retrieve your stuff if tghey are shutting down. If the same is not true for a personal user, I would find a different service.
If you use Time Machine to back up your Mac that is a great idea.
You may want to consider using a separate external hard drive for your photos, and if you use Lightroom it is easy to store those catalogs there.
I also use Zenfolio to display, and sell my images, and all of the images that I have for sale are there and I can download the original file, should I need it. The Zenfolio account yearly fee is $100, as Jimquist has already mentioned. At times you have to memory lapse and can't get your finger and mouse to find the photos, so you can go to your Zenfolio account and download the original file.
So it is another solution in addition to Time Machine and external hard drives.
Remember hard drives are going to fail, it's a matter of when, the solution of course is solid state hard drives, which are expensive now for large capacities
I also use Carbonite in addition to Time Machine, External Hard Drives. Carbonite provides an off-site solution in addition.
