I bought a MacBook Pro with Retina Display, which only has 256 MB of flash drive. I am backed up with a Passport 2 GB portable external hard drive, and Apple helped me set up as a "Time Machine". It automatically backs up my MacBook every hour.
Also have my Windows computer with an external hard drive, and I save my Scan Discs on that computer and external hard drive.
Just returned from ten days in Hawaii and trying to save everything now.
I have a D7000 so I have and save both RAW and JPEG, on both computers and external hard drives.
OPEN TO OTHER SUGGESTIONS.
Thanks
Duane

I have started using network attached storage. This is a physical box connected to your computer or (better) local network. Mine has two 2TB drives which are mirrored, so a single drive failure doesn't lose anything. These NAS devices have processing power and network connectivity. That manages the storage and also allows remote access. I'm considering cloud backup for that. Computer guys follow a 3-2-1 rule. At least three copies, at last two different media and at least one of them offsite. My NAS is the NSA320 - best combination of price and performance for me.

I am very pleased with my Western Digital My Passport for Mac. It plugs in and you drag and drop. No attempt to try to back up your hard drive like my old Western Digital used to do. It was $79 for 1 Tb. I have put tons of school files, 10 years of yearbook photos, and my personal photos from 100+ CDs, and the drive is now 15% full. I actually bought two drives and have one in a safe at home.

Yep, it was a disaster, but I'm still hopeful. I'm leaning on getting two or maybe three external drives. Good luck.

I use zenfolio. there is no limit to what you can upload and you can hide folders so that only you can see them. I figure the cost of about $100.00 a year for unlimited storage sure beats the cost of external hard drives.

Except zenfolio can't back up raw files only JPEG's.

Self help is the safest and least expensive solution. Here is the same answer I gave in another thread.

I back up to two 1TB externals automatically every three hours and have a third one in a safe deposit box at the bank. Every month (or whenever I leave town) I switch one of the live externals with the one at the bank. Total cost: about $100 each for the hard drives plus $50 per year for the safe deposit box.

There are a variety of on-line services available but for anything like a terabyte of storage they are going to cost you an arm and a leg every year that they remain in business. And when they go bust, your pictures are gone. Not to mention that it might take you a couple of months to do the initial backup.

There was a similar thread yesterday or the day before. External RAID's, NAS, etc. One of the NAS vendors had a list of backup software which included Mac applications.

For a simple backup, depending on the security needed, how about a Other World Computing RAID5 with Firewire interface? I think that a USB connection might be a bit slow but I have no idea about our need for speed. However, the new Thunderbolt interface is FAST and the USB 3.0 specs also look good. Former not on the 2010 MacBook Pros. Not sure of your level of USB.

Also, as a general aside. There is a device called 'Black X' by Thermaltake that has models with USB, Firewire, and eSATA interfaces. This allows you to take a standard SATA harddrive, either full or laptop size, slide it in and use it as another back up device. I have 6 3 TB drives that I use to back up my RAID (Not that much data yet but I keep a rotation going so the newest is always off site). Keep them in a Safe Deposit Box with a Blue-Ray Disc that I burn each year of the latest work.

HTH
I also back up my processed and printed images, in final ready for the printer form, Monthly and take out of the house.

I'm currently using Time Machine/Capsule for general backup, but want an external drive so I can manually store just my photos.

I keep all my photos on an external in separate folders. Each folder, when reaching the proper size, I burn to DVD. Each one of those goes into a storage folder, meant for music CD's but works fine, in the closet on a shelf. I keep the folders on my external only for easy access. And while compiling a new folder I keep a back up of it on my second external. When I burn, the backup on the second external is deleted.

I've had a crash before and don't want to lose what I have all over again.

A 2 TB drive won't last the rest of your life, data grows when you aren't looking. :-)

Get two drives so you can back up one with the other (just ask PAB20, http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-168832-1.html

Been there done that. My external hard drive crapped out before I backed it up. Been sitting at computer repair shop 6 weeks and am losing any hope of getting my thousands of photos back. Dual redundant or cloud is the only thing I will do now.....

What kind of companies were the ones which closed suddenly?

Retail. One was my favourite fabric store, the other one an office supply store. The third one, with the staff locked out without notice, I don't recall, but it sure made headlines in the newspapers.
And yes, the same could happen to companies offering on-line space as well.

Get an SSD { solid state drive} external hard drive. There is no moving parts and quicker downloads and uploads. They are more expensive but are coming down in price gradually.
