I'm crushed as all of my photos, which were stored on my external hard drive, sea gate, may be lost. My sea gate stopped working, so my hubby brought it to a computer repair shop to see if the data can be obtained. Yes, I had all of my photos stored on it, and if it can't be gotten, then I've lost them all. :-( My question is "what would you recommend me putting my photos on as a back up"? I will get another external hard drive, but would like to also store my photos elsewhere. (Oh, I don't store them on my computer's hard drive as it would take up too much space.) I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they can be retrieved. I welcome all input.

I just use two external hard discs and so always have two copies , I guess the next move would be cloud storage

In addition to external drives, we back up to a Time Machine which is a router with a 1 TB drive.

Thanks breck. I'm not at all familiar with cloud storage. I'd rather use something besides that. I appreciate your feedback.

I have no solution except make sure you get a second opinion as well.
The hindsight is obvious.
Good luck

Thanks BigBear. I'm not familiar with that either. Can you expand more on that type of storage for me?

Keeping in mind that I know very little about computers I have mine backed up on DVDs. I don't know if that is a good thing or not but thats what I do.

Thanks for your reply Pepper. I did indeed think of using a CD, but wanted to see what all my options would possibly be. :-)

If there was no physical or magnetic damage to the drive, the data can definitely be recovered. The question is how much do you want to pay for it? The higher level recovery options can cost $1000-2000.

It seems that the easiest option is to "mirror" to a second external drive. While drives fail, they don't usually fail at the same time, unless there is an external event (like electrical spike). If you back up weekly, you could disconnect the backup drive when you're not doing the backup, to further limit the risk.

External discs are inexpensive and I plug two in. I save photos to the first and back up photos and documents on a monthly basis to the second disc.

With ssd becoming common, I will probably begin saving a yearly file on the ssd and then save to the first hard disc at the end of the year.

Thanks for the link BigBear. I'll have my hubby look into it more. I don't have a mac, but I'll keep it in mind.

Thanks yryan. I didn't realize I could use two.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I don't know what the heck happend, but I want to avoid possibly losing my photos ever again. I appreciate your feedback & hadn't thought about using two external drives.
