I use a Macbook Pro (c. 2010) and need an external drive to backup my photos. I'm looking for some suggestions and couldn't think of a better place to go than UHH.

Any and everything used to backup computer data can be used so...

You can use program like Acronis to create single file of everything or go onto 'live backup (continuous)...

The filed is wide open.

I'm just starting to work with files on my computer and it's clear that the data piles up quickly, especially since I'm working with jpegs and raw files both. So I need to get if off my computer's drive. After a little research, I was thinking a 2 TB drove would probably last the rest of my life. I also use Time Machine as back up. Any suggestions?

A 2 TB drive won't last the rest of your life, data grows when you aren't looking. :-)

Get two drives so you can back up one with the other (just ask PAB20, http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-168832-1.html

Thanks amehta. Just tried the link and couldn't get through but I'm sure it was a disaster story. I know I need a secondary backup and thought I'd see about an online service. Would that be sufficient?

The " ) " became part of the link, now it works.

Online is a good option if
* you have the network speed to handle it,
* you don't mind that someone else has your data,
* you don't mind the ongoing cost.
On the plus side, they do much more to keep your data safe than we are likely to.

Thanks again, amehta. Checked out the link and indeed it was a disaster story but following the thread many of my questions were answered. I guess it's an external drive, time capsule and the cloud then.

Yep, it was a disaster, but I'm still hopeful. I'm leaning on getting two or maybe three external drives. Good luck.

I prefer 1tb drives max. The larger the drive the more info that could be lost. I backup my files(jpgs and raw) on drives then upload to smugmug all the highrez jpgs. Works for me.

I use zenfolio. there is no limit to what you can upload and you can hide folders so that only you can see them. I figure the cost of about $100.00 a year for unlimited storage sure beats the cost of external hard drives.

I use SyncBack Free and three external drives, 1TB, 1TB, 2TB, and back up most of my data every couple of days.

The advantage of using Acronis as the software with whatever hardware you purchase is that it performs a mirror image of your computer.....including operating system and other programs. It will guide you into making a bootable disk so if your computer crashes you can boot the computer and then restore everything through Acronis from your backup drive. I also find that Acronis True Image backs up faster than the WD software. I am currently using one 3tb WD MyBook to back up my computer, including my images. At some point I plan to purchase a second one to keep off site.

And another negative: Companies can and do go out of business, including the ones that offer space to store your photos on-line, so have at least one other means of backing up, like an external hard drive.

True, but if they go out of business, you can sign up with another company before they shut down, with no loss of backup security. As long as they're not your ONLY copy, you're fine.
