I found some Feisol tripods at my local camera store. I am 6'2" and with a ball head and no center column I can set my camera higher than I can see through. My cost was $419 just for the tripod and I went without the center column. Take a look at the four section ones.

Still searching for a quality carbon fiber tripod that won't break the bank. I need a tripod that will fit a 6'5" guy. I would love to get a Really Right Stuff 34L tripod, but with a ball head is going to cost about $1500.

If you have the time you might want to look at purchasing a scanner to do the job yourself. I have included a link from Adorama for just one of the many they offer. That way you have control over what you are doing and can adust your files and pictures to the outcome you desire.

Good to know. Thanks for the info.

I actually talked with a rep at Pro show. Pro show accepts the large photos as they are. It also accepts the small ones as they are. When it outputs the show to your desired publication it then resizes the photos according to the output program. In other words, if you output to a DVD it resizes the photos to 720X480. If you output to a Blu-Ray it sizes them quite a bit larger. So, if you have images that are smaller then the output required it enlarges them. Small images might enlarge to the 720X480 just fine, but not to the blu-ray size. So the size of your images is dependant on the output size required. Always best to have larger files for the program.

It appears to find a middle ground. I don't really know how it works and have never researched it, but I have had some small photos submitted to me to include in presentations and they are enlarged to the point of being unrecognizable.

Pro Show does not enlarge small photos to fit. It takes large photos and resizes them down to fit. If you have a small photo it stays small and the background fills in the blanks.

Depends on the program you are using to create the slideshow. I use Proshow by Photodex and it resizes the pictures to all be uniform.

Has any body had experience with them? Using Epson V500 scanner to scan into LR5.6 -- want to resize to be used in slideshow for a wedding --- do all pics have to be same size as I will also be scanning in 4x6 and converting slides to jpeg. I am not a professional just a Dad running slideshow in the background during the reception or do I need a pro.

If you do this often you may want to consider a 50mm 1.8 lens. I use this lens when shooting indoor sports and high school plays and ceremonies. With adjusted white balance it does a very good job.

Shooting a stage production last night on manual mode.
ISO set at 800 (no flash allowed), 24-70 lens at f3.5, ss at 100/sec.
I noticed my ss fluctuating between 1/100sec, 1/160sec, and 1/60 sec. So, two out of three pics were garbage.
I ended up going with shutter mode and that stabilized it. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

I have this one. I am 6' 2" and this goes higher than I need to stand straight up. And that is without a center column. http://www.feisol.net/feisol-classic-large-tripod-ct3471-rapid-p-2.html

I'm looking for a travel-sized (under 22" folded) tripod that is lightweight (ideally no more than 5-6 pounds) and extends to my eye height (74 inches). Do you know of any firm that makes a tripod or tripods that fit these specifications? All you tall photogs out there, have you any recommendations? Shorter tripods are fine for those occasions where you have room to work, but when you're jammed together in a small space with 60,000 of your "closest" friends, crouching down to sight thru a camera that's 5 feet off the ground is next to impossible.

Not sure what the point of this is. I would not purchase one of the best full frame cameras on the market to shoot in cropped mode.

Well maybe, but I will tell you that I am extremely aware of my surroundings, who else is shooting, and I have stepped away from many opportunities to allow parents the chance to step in and get the pictures they are after.

I am a teacher at a high school and spend hours upon hours every year attending events and taking pictures for no charge. Most photographers are pretty good about knowing their surroundings and keeping out of each others way. One time I was standing in the end zone all by myself, sparse crowd. And some photographer hired by some parent walks right in front of me and sets up to take his pictures right in my sight line. Usually I just move but this was the third incident during the school year and I called him on it none too nicely. He got upset with me and giving me grief about it not being my field. The violent scenes that took place in my head never came true, but man, these people seem to be everywhere.

I don't know anything about the program, and sadly didn't save the emails, but I recently received some offer from Avanquest software about their ability to repixelate(?) pictures. Might be worth looking at if you have no other options.I reiterate I know nothing about the company or the program but might be worth a look.

There are times when the single shot is the best way for me. Volleyball is the first that comes to mind. There is a sense of accomplishment catching the moment of impact. And you're right, it doesn't always work. But with practice there are far more keepers than not.

bj, the purist is not so pure after all. Thanks for admitting that you use both continuous and single. Real world.

When I shoot in continuous, I am often amazed how quickly the action moves between shots. When shooting at 5 frames per second, that is 200 msec between shots. That is much less than normal reflexes from eye to brain back to finger of about 300 msec. A lot can happen in those 300 msec so that is why I shoot continuously. Whether you shoot continuously or singly, I think it is more a matter of luck than skill unless you are Ted Williams.

There's a difference in the level of sports one shoots also. I shoot high school which is considerably slower than professional or even college level. Do I get the best shot all the time? No way. But I noticed that when I was shooting in burst (6fps) that quite often the picture I wanted was in between the shots I was getting. So I spent considerable time learning to anticipate and time the shots I wanted. I enjoy getting the bat connecting with the ball, the moment of release on a layup, the goalie in midair making the save. These are the pictures the kids also like to see of themselves. And when I shot in burst mode I never came close to capturing the golf club at impact with the ball. I use burst in football, I use burst in track and field, I have just learned to go about some things differently. I know I am in the minority, but what I am doing works quite well for me.

Absolutely. I agree with everything you said. I suppose the difference between someone who is good at estimating the precise moment to capture an anticipated and expected result and professionals who take these shots for a living is that the pros also capture the unexpected. There's always the dropped ball, the collision at second base, the loss of a ski on a downhill run.......... each of these things could have been captured routinely in a burst of photos, but rarely with a single shot - because it's unexpected, and usually happens before or after the timing for the 'perfect shot'.

There's a great blog that includes notes from some of the world's greatest sports photographers, who routinely quote the use of burst mode in their work.
It's an interesting read - AND with some GREAT sports action photos.

I respectfully disagree. I have found that I have gotten far better shots by anticipating the action and going with a single shot. Unless you are shooting 10+ frames per seconfd it is easy to miss exactly what you are after.
abc1234 wrote:
Two suggestions. Forget about the fence and stand on the field. If you have not done so, shoot in continuous mode. The action is too fast to catch exactly when you want to. For example, you might have caught the second shot a little sooner so that the face would show more and the bat and ball would be closer.
