For example If you have a keyword 'animals' that contains 'dogs' that contains 'boxer', when you tag a picture of a boxer, it will also inherit the tags dogs and animals. This is a lot easier than manually tagging all three and, later you can find the picture using any of them.

Can you elaborate on how you have keywords within keywords?

Sure.

You can drag them over each other, or right click and 'create a new keyword within...'

When you search for mammal you will get your dog (and other mammals) and you boxer (and other dogs)

When you tag a pic of a boxer, it will be tagged dog and mammal.

Note that you can have duplicates (and might want them) so you can, in the dog example above) also have:
People>Professions>Sports>Boxer

So you can get a lot of information about your boxer dog by tagging it:
Mammal>Dog>Boxer

Hmmm, but in this case when you tag your dog as a boxer which set of tags would it inherit? Mammal or Sports Professions? Or both? Very handy if you have a boxing boxer.

I'll play with it to see how it works...

Sun Sniper makes straps with an anti-theft wire running through it. Might be worth checking out.

Sun Sniper is one of the Re-Brands of the same strap I am reviewing at the moment. They actually make nothing, but buy re-branded items and sell them as their own. Look at their logo and the logo of this "Safe and Fast" brand:

Interesting, I didn't know that. I assume Sun Sniper charges a premium for the privilege of putting a new logo on it. I'm not in the market for a new strap, though, so I haven't researched pricing lately.

What about Induro?

I have an Induro carbon fiber, it's light and very solid. It wasn't cheap, though. Well, cheaper than Gitzo, but most brands are.

I suppose given the right decor they might be OK. Beautiful -- not so much.

I would guess that is more a function of the processing of the image than the display medium. The metal prints I have seen of landscapes have been beautiful. Very crisp with wonderful color.

I'm curious if the metal prints are more suited to color photos, or do B&W prints look ok, too?

Aluminum prints of B&W also give a "deeper" look and feel than similar paper prints. They also tend to look darker than you expected (or at least than I expected).

If you're serious about doing one or some, I would suggest you have them done in 4 x 6 first to see if it's really what you want (see my description of sequence higher in this thread).

Thanks for the info and the suggestions. Do you mean they came out darker on metal than the same file would be on paper? Just clarifying, since some people have reported that their paper prints came out darker than what they saw on the screen (probably related to brightness settings on the monitor). Either way, your advice to do 4x6 test prints is a good idea.

They turn out darker in a similar sense that a freshly waxed dark-colored car looks darker than a clean but not so shiny dark-colored car. That's the best I can do with words, you need to see examples if you are interested.

OK, I get what you mean. I definitely want to see some examples and do a few test prints myself. Thanks!

I've actually had hair samples sent to my lab so that I could determine if they were from a Sasquatch or not (I work in forensics). My first question was, what crime are you trying to solve? The detective was not amused by my skepticism, they were serious about finding out.

why don't people say what gear they are using, new lens, good, what (nice shots)

You still don't get it. The lens was a telephoto and by the looks of the pictures a fairly strong one. The quality of the lens looks good. But the pictures look good because of the photographer not the equipment so much. We just had a big discussion on here two days ago about if money was not object. In the end the guy asking already had top end equipment and not great shots. So it's not the equipment as much as it is the person using it.

I say lighten up. I don't blame JR1 and others for asking about the lens, especially when the topic post says "... the new lens..." then doesn't specify what it is. It simply invites a discussion of the new toy.

If I post a topic saying "Got a new car!", I think it would be fine for people to ask "what did you get?", rather than saying "...it's the driver, not the car that matters."

Anyway, nice pics!

Buying a car isn't the same thing. You drive a car but you create with a lens. I find to many people are hung up on the equipment instead of the techniques. I've seen photographers make great pictures with run of the mill equipment and photographer with all the latest and hung up on brand names just making snap shots. I guess the best way to say it is, try to develop your skill instead of your arsenal. Then when you do buy that new piece of equipment you can do great things right off the bat. ShaneT said herself, she's still learning to use the new lens. I just bought a large telephoto zoom myself. I've discovered that I'll have to learn to get the most out of it. But it is capable even if I'm not yet.
quote=CSI Dave quote=lovitlots quote=JR1 why do... (show quote)

I totally agree with you, practice to improve your skills, don't buy equipment hoping it will do it for you. Yes, the car analogy isn't entirely accurate, but my point was that when someone's post topic is that they got something new, people will be inclined to ask what it is.

Hi everyone,
I'm selling my Nikon 18-105 1:3.5-5.6G ED VR lens. I thought I would post here first before it goes on Ebay. It's in excellent condition, used only occasionally. Great optics, great walk-around lens. Selling because I have other (faster) glass that covers this range and I don't use this much anymore. Comes with front and rear caps, hood and cloth bag. I don't have the box anymore.

I'm looking to get $200 USD, including shipping to lower 48. Paypal preferred. I have perfect feedback on ebay, I'm happy to share my user id so you can look it up.
PM through UHH or email at mtbspirk@hotmail.com
Thanks,
Dave

I am going to Arizona in ten days. Any photo advice? I will be looking for dramatic geology and railroads. I'll be based in Phoenix. Thanx

For easy access to "dramatic geology", try the rugged Superstition mountains, about an hour east of Phoenix. The windy road to Canyon Lake and Tortilla Flat is a fun drive. (Attached is a snapshot.) I agree with some of the other suggestions posted, too. The Grand Canyon Railway is open all year, but I don't know how many photo ops there are unless you actually ride the train.

Has anyone used CanvasWorld.com for canvas prints? Curious if anyone has used them and any thoughts on the quality. I live in a small town so online is my only option for canvas prints. ie: no Costco, Sams, etc. Thanks for sharing any experiences you have had with CanvasWorld. TNmike

Yes, I just tried CanvasWorld for the first time, got two prints last week, an 8x10 and 11x14. Both turned out very good. I went through a Groupon-type discount site for a much lower price than they normally charge, so I didn't shop around for other places. The only downside was that I thought their shipping was a little steep ($15 each, they wouldn't combine them, either).

Yes its Nikon - as i stated earlier - i also told the OP thw reason for his problem - why do you all keep going on about calibrating his monitor - its the inability of third party software to read accurately the nikon files - i've stated the first step in the path in my earlier post .

First, pending further information from the OP, I doubt this problem can only be attributed to third party software. True, Nikon is the only one that has the "key" to the actual RAW format. Others, like Adobe have to reverse engineer the files so their software can read the RAW data (and they've done it quite successfully, I might add. Otherwise they'd be out of business.) I've been able to use Lightroom and Photoshop with my D7000 to get great photographs that look consistent from screen to print, starting with Nikon's NEF (RAW) files, so ViewNX is not a requirement. I'm not familiar with PhotoPlusX6, though. The OP said he's also having trouble with JPEG files not printing properly. JPEGs are a universal format, not proprietary. Any software should be able to read them accurately, it doesn't require ViewNX.

Second, we are mentioning screen calibration because it is essential to obtaining an accurate print output. Don't believe me? Try using ViewNX on a screwed up monitor and see if the prints come out ok. You can adjust skin tones, etc, all you want in ANY software, but it's futile if it doesn't represent what gets sent to the printer. When I hear someone having a problem getting prints that look like what's on the camera or computer screen, it screams 'color management issue'. The basic steps to fix the problem involve calibrating/profiling the monitor and printer. Eliminate one variable at a time until we can identify the source of the problem. I hope the OP will fill us in along the way.
