I have the Nicon AW 100 and have been very happy with it.I use it when Im sking;Kayaking and w/w rafting.the new Nicon is the aw120 I think.
all of Louis L Amour books are still available but if you want to read another good series of westerns p/u the books by William W Johnstone.I think his books are every bit as good.
I myself use the viewfinder most of the time but I have found that there are times that using the lcd screen is easier. last week I was trying some night shots and found that using the lcd screen was easier.try it both ways and see witch you like best.

if you want to get out of L.A for a day you can catch a boat and go to Catalina Island.the boat leaves from Long Beach or San Pedro at 10 am every moring and comes back at 7pm each night.it cost is about $70.00 r/t.
A good book you might want to check out is;Beyond Point- and - Shoot by Darrell Young. It is a great book if you are moving up to Digital SLR. About $17.00 0n Amoson.
If you cannot hike in Brice or Zion but can ride a Horse try taking the tour on Horseback at both places.I promise you will have a great tour and get some beautiful pictures and you will get to some awesome places.I think the gided tours are 2 to 4 hours.Have a great trip.
I have had my A65 for a year and have not had a problem as yet.
I spent 2 years on the flight deck of the Kearsarge CVS 33 in 69 and 70.you are right not for the squeamish your head is on a swivel always looking around.If you get blown off the deck it is about 100ft to the water;chance of dying 90%.plenty of excitement though.
