After 5 years and over 6000 shutter counts (sadly most still on my computer) Finally found a meaningfull upgrade for my Sony Alpha230.
My local camera shop had a 2nd hand Sony SLT Alpha65 body, also picked up a minolta 1 - 4.5 100 - 200mm zoom. Deal was affordable with the trade in of my 230 body and a canon 75 - 300 lens. under £400
I had two 75-300's one canon F1.5 and one sigma dg macro 1.4- 5.6 seemed silly to keep both.
now just have to settle down with the manual and set it up as I want it. Loads of new capabilities rather than the odd tweek. I Will keep the EOS 450D for a while longer..there is probably a 'must have' needed in the near future.

IMHO, probably the best deal, for the money, on the market today.
I have the A77, A900, A850 and A700 and still prefer the A900 over the A77.

I have had an A65 for 2 years and really like it. Just sent an older A55 that I got cheap off to have it converted to infrared--maybe an idea for your old one!

Congrats on the new (to you) toy.
6000 Shutter cont is not all that much really. Most of these DSLRs are good for 100,000+

can anyone tell us what kinds of shutter counts they got off their top notch film cameras?

Just curious ...., how did you determine the shutter count on your old Sony? Thanks!

Hi All,
as I had the sony from new I took the last picture index number to be the total shutter count (I have never used reset to factory settings - don't even think that that would change picture index numbers as it would confuse computer when downloading.)I do not think there is another way to get shutter count from a Sony: Canon and Nikon yes but those programmes don't read sony to my knowlege. The one I have doesn't...
I appreciate that the shutter count was low as far as condition is concerned. However having four cameras would alert the wife as to how much I am spending on an - as yet hobby.....!!!! best to justify purchase as a trade in....My little canon only has a 7000+ shutter count and can probably handle longer shutter speeds better than the A230. It can also stay out in the van till the newness wears off the A65.
New Full frame - really is a lot of money. I think spending cash on glass and using multiple shots either as a focus/exposure stack or as a photo merge panorama etc gets a similar effect as and when required. The A65 says its large file prints at A3 and as I use a tripod more often than not I could probably get away with even printing lager (I 'll call it a Fosters') Don't know how the A65 handles the picture edges yet so it may be that I may have to crop as much as you do on FF anyways.
Shutter counts may be a little subjective - how many people take thousands of shots per month in order to get an industry standard 100,000 in a reasonable timescale. If the shutter breaks would you replace shutter or the whole shebang for a newer model. Who would know... If you shoot anywhere close to that number you are probably a professional making lots of cash so upgrade or trade in long before that in order to keep your kit in warrentee and dependable. The man still using the Canon D1 from new is probably in a niche market, or not getting paid very often...I can now buy one for £300 but I won't.
As a deal there is only one higher sony camera below full frame and the differences between the two are minimal on paper so yes, I'm really pleased plus the original reciept was in the box It sold for £650 new 10 months ago...Bit like cars I suppose - the cost plummets once it comes out of the showroom and then declines much more slowly thereafter (hopefully).
if I was you I would p/u David Buschs book on the ASLT A65 it covers the cameras features step by step.Tons of information.price US about $20.00.

You will love the A65. I upgraded from the A35 a couple months ago and I had the A230 before the A35. Sony makes great cameras and I'm sure you will enjoy your A65 as much as I'm enjoying mine.
