Correction on location name: Alafia banks, not Alafia flats. Alafia river empties into the bay nearby. The banks are a series of small mangrove islands accessible only by pontoon boat.

These are great blue herons except for the small one which is called a tri-color, as I understand it.

taken at same place in Tampa bay as the spoonbills, herons, cormorants, pelicans, ibises, and other birds in separate posts today. Alafia banks (I incorrectly called it Alafia flats in earlier posts; may John Jay Audubon forgive my soul.)

It's called a reddish egret. Egrets and herons are in the same family.

You have to get on a flat boat at Williams park boat ramp and go out about 20 minutes or so into the bay. It's quite a rich environment . Here is the Flickr album that collects all my pix taken on a single morning this week. https://flic.kr/s/aHskwzuUVs

Thanks. The images are all cropped but they did get close enough to put a good number of pixels into the frame. If you watch their landing patterns you can see where they're going and reposition yourself.

Took these photos on Tuesday morning near a mangrove island in the middle of Tampa bay FL called Alafia flats. Also snapped a bunch of other birds - herons, ibis, cormorants, brown and white pelicans, egrets and more - which I will post separately.
