The notion of an electronic shutter is not far-fetched to my way of thinking. What is a sensor - it is a collection of microscopic-sized transisters capable of holding a charge. The light from scene falling on the sensor causes it to take on some charge state and this charge state when processed through the camera firnware creates an image file. What do see in the EVF or LCD screen - does that info come from the sensor chrarge state. If so, then why not just save the charge state. Or does the camera have two sensors - one to supply the EVF & LCD visuals and one to make the image file. They would have to be in the same place like a sandwich, yes.

The Feb 1 issue of Shutterbug (free read for Amazon Prime readers this month!) has an interesting article on electronic shutters and why they are currently inferior to shutter cameras - but not for long - due to rolling shutter distortion as all pixels are not exposed at the same time.

I prefer #1 - to me it pulls in all elements of the shot in a more balanced and distinct manner.

$120 a year for something I already have - LR6. Do I really need every little tweak that Adobe adds to LR? No, I don't. If I stop paying, I lose LR. For me, it's a choice of paying $120 a year or paying nothing. LR does all I want it to do. If I were doing processing as a business, I might be tempted. Maybe. There are now so many good alternatives to Lightroom for under $100.

Quicken is now selling by subscription. The $60 version I got years ago will last me the rest of my life. The alternative is to pay them $90 every twenty-seven months. Pretty soon, almost everything will be "Pay Forever," but I'm resisting as long as I can.

Get a windows machine!

I had a D(h)ell 15" Inspiron earlier this year - I used it for 3 months and then got rid of it.The Windows 10 software had a learning curve, but I did like it. It worked well - just different. A great improvement on prior releases. However, the hardware was buggy and had the worst trackpad I have ever used. I had to use a corded mouse to make it usable. Maybe I should have tried a Lenovo. I have had Macs for almost 15 years and like them a lot. Only minor issues typically easily fixed with telephone support or at Genius Bar! D(h)ell support was sub-optimal. What would make me move to another manufacturer is not the OS (at this point in time) but the inability (built in obsolescence) to upgrade the devices. I have a 2013 MacBook Air with a 256 SSD and it still runs like it state of the art. Upgrading it is difficult. Affinity continues to work well - just wish Affinity had a DAM.

I have same issue - Nikon software won’t read directly from sd card on my Mac. I have to save photos (in a folder to keep separate) onto desktop and then import into Nikon transfer.

This article explains quite well, to transfer to a mac (in that format) it needs to be running high sierra by default HEIF files will be converted to jpeg for cases where HEIF isn't supported.

I haven't looked far into it yet, but if HEIF does give better bit depth and color accuracy than jpeg then you will be losing quality with that conversion.

It's probably an improvement over jpeg with some more intense number crunching. Processing power has improved considerably since jpeg was conceived and back in the day this format might have required too much processing power to efficiently encode it in a reasonable time. for current hardware it is probably not an issue.

Agreed with the concept of smaller cameras - that's why I still love my G9!

A few years ago in the summer I loaned my then 13 year old niece my G9. She had shown some interest in photography and saw how versatile it was compared to a phone camera. The only condition was that I get it the G9 back at Thanksgiving. The G9 is a solid (sturdy), small capable camera that isn't too complicated and it easy to start with in auto and then experiment. Well, she got hooked. She had a great time and lots of fun using it with her cousins/friends the rest of the summer. We all enjoyed seeing her photos at Thanksgiving. The perspective of a teenager....She felt a lot of enjoyment and satisfaction of taking and seeing photos. I got my G9 back and she got a Nikon bridge camera (I don't recall which one) that she picked out that Christmas. She now has a Canon 80D. This was my process - no cost high impact. Turn them loose. No pressure just fun.
Point is if he really knows what he wants then get it. Just be sure......
