Like #2- shows more detail, Mac!

2 for only the obvious reason, both are worthy
The detail holds up in the cropped version, so normally I would say that one. However, the moving foot blur is even more pronounced in it, so for that reason I'm voting for the first one. And I like the background.
Number 2 and I like the photo.

Both are good but I like the second one best. What kind of bird is this?
Hmmm, to others, why #2? Just because the bird is bigger? OP ask about crop, i.e., composition. What if the bird in each view was printed (presented here) at the same size and let the actual frame go where it goes for that sized bird due to the crop? When viewing download I prefer #1. #1 is very slightly sharper too.
either one ....... to nit pick the bottom one ....but a little looser...... I want to see more at the bottom (just a little)

#1 I like the composition....More room in front of bird giving it space, somewhere to go.
Sorry for bucking the trend here, but in my perspective (which I freely admit is my distorted view of reality), I actually prefer the compositional balance of the first crop.
I’m a big fan of wood grain and the multiple variations present in the plumage; to me, the linear elements in the wood grain balance very well with all those different types of feathers on display. There’s also the “less is more” element (think of your favorite bonsai tree portrait, and how that, as a whole, always represents an entire, normal sized tree viewed at a distance... until the mind realizes it’s 10 inches tall, viewed 24 inches away!). Lastly, the strong diagonal lines of such a cute little birdie really work better (for me), with the background represented in crop 1.
And that’s the beauty of photographic art... the eye of the beholder is the magic prize, that so many would-be photographers (and dare I say it?; even more post processors?) fail to capture. 😉
I prefer #1 primarily for the composition as mentioned by some others. I would actually like to see even a little more space above the bird. I feel like he will pop right out of the frame if he straightens up. Aside from that, I think it is an excellent photo - sharp, clear and with a lovely background!
Sorry, forgot to add... I Love this Candid Portrait (for, in my humble opinion, that’s what it is)!

The first. Better composition.
