There are days when I grab either my Canon 6d or 7d2, attach the Sigma 150-600 Contemporary and go for a walk. If I see a hawk up in a tree or anything else for that matter, I'll line up handheld, steady on whatever is handy, and take a shot or two. When I return home and pull the card out of the camera to take a look, invariably, the image is soft or out of focus. Most, if not all, shots are taken in aperture priority with the lens at full zoom. The focus setting is 1 pt in the center, I attempt to focus them recompose. Exposure is evaluative metering. I only have a few images to share because go straight to the trash. Here's one of them. My question is, even with a tripod, using auto focus (in this case trying to focus on the center eagle), what's the maximum distance a person can shot to and expect reasonably sharp images with this sort of setup? Or is it as I fear a little, a bit of a crap shoot depending on conditions, wind, haze, lighting, etc?

Also, whenever I get a shot with poor sharpness (too often :), I always wonder if IS / VR played a role.
