I do the same with Google navigation / Android.
IMHO, Google nav works better than most/ all built in car systems and some stand alones.

There are days when I grab either my Canon 6d or 7d2, attach the Sigma 150-600 Contemporary and go for a walk. If I see a hawk up in a tree or anything else for that matter, I'll line up handheld, steady on whatever is handy, and take a shot or two. When I return home and pull the card out of the camera to take a look, invariably, the image is soft or out of focus. Most, if not all, shots are taken in aperture priority with the lens at full zoom. The focus setting is 1 pt in the center, I attempt to focus them recompose. Exposure is evaluative metering. I only have a few images to share because go straight to the trash. Here's one of them. My question is, even with a tripod, using auto focus (in this case trying to focus on the center eagle), what's the maximum distance a person can shot to and expect reasonably sharp images with this sort of setup? Or is it as I fear a little, a bit of a crap shoot depending on conditions, wind, haze, lighting, etc?

Also, whenever I get a shot with poor sharpness (too often :), I always wonder if IS / VR played a role.

Agreed. I like the way you put it.

Sad, true, but caused by the millions who pirated Adobe apps over the years.

Don't steal intellectual property. Someone worked very hard to create it. They're entitled to eat.

Two suggestions, questions and comments:
1- Do not presume to know why Adobe went to the cloud model. Are you that all knowing?
2- Do not ASSume that most people are thieves stealing and pirating software. Is this knowledge based on your personal behavior?

As one who pays for software, hardware and everything else; I strongly resent your high and mighty generalizations. You are insulting without basis!

Call me old fashioned but I won't pay another monthly fee. I already do enough of those. It is kind of like paying every month for sweeping my floor. Sell me a broom and I will do it myself.

What a foolish thing to say about people you know nothing about. I spent 4 years in defense of my country(USMC) and another 20 years as a police officer in service to my community so I doubt I will loose it. Someday a hilarious old guy might save your a$$, in the meantime, you might want to keep your snarky remarks to yourself.

SS; I have to say, I really appreciate your sense of humor.

And after calibrating, I do see the monkey --- he is holding a blue circle while riding a rhino.

My apologies to the OP -- just needed a laugh.

Sorry if this is in the wrong Board area.

We are visiting people in the Mystic CT area and I want to identify some good places to photograph wildlife and landscapes. I was hoping that someone might offer some suggestions.

Also, so far I have identified the following and wonder if anyone could recommend any or all.

1- Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center DPNC
109 Pequotsepos Rd, Mystic, CT 06355
2- Coogan Farm Nature and Heritage Center
3- Barn Island Wildlife Management Area (Stonington – 20 minutes from Mystic)
4- Bluff Point State Park, 55 Depot Road, Groton, CT 06340 (15 minutes from Mystic)

Thanks in advance.

I have had the D800 and loved it but it was broken and could not be repaired so I got a D810 and it is better with better processing system and auto focus Yes I would buy the D810

I totally agree -- get the D810, no contest. I have used both a lot and later sold the D800. The 810 is now my main camera and I love it.

Obviously it depends on your photography, but if a DX is acceptable, also consider the new D500.

Good luck.

Whoops! Just read that you decided on the D800. Ignore above and ENJOY your new camera!

Lower Lens Trekker. Made just for that lens with an attached body. I love mine, and it allows for adding more S&F cases to it for carrying other gear along.

I decided on the Tamrac; but when I looked at it, it is actually larger than its specified dimensions and will not be airline acceptable. My equipment is also tight inside. So now my first choice is the Lowepro as you suggest. However the Lowepro Lens Trekker 600 is available in both the older AW II and the newer AW III. Which do you have/ recommend? Are there significant differences that you know of? (Aside from the fact that the newer one is $100 more.)

Thanks MT

I am a panty hose man myself. No not wearing em, well OK just occasionally I do. I like to recycling old pairs. Tie one leg around each leg of a long lens and there you go. The double gusset makes a nice soft pad for your shoulder or neck. if you find yourself in a sticky situation it makes a great weapon I can assure you. Swing that around your head and make contact and your gonna leave the bad guy in need of some serious dental work!
Hope that helps bro.

By far, the most helpful of input; thanks Billyspad. I hear told that pantyhose are also good for an emergency fan belt.

Have to ask my girlfriend to demonstrate that soft shoulder/ neck pad next time she wears them. LOL

Did look at this one and decided that it was too large -- glad to hear you like it though; I appreciate your use experience/ judgement.

Thanks for your input.

Kinesis makes nice long lens cases. The 9" depth preference might be a problem. They also have extension lids if the height is not enough.

Thanks OddJobber -- this is a nice bag; but, like the Lowepro Lens Trekker, it is a little larger than I would like.

Might have narrowed it to either the tamrac 5793 or the think tank glass limo
*********************************************
I searched and looked and read and became dizzy. So now turning to you guys for comments from those of you who have used either or both -- or another backpack you like best for the Nikon 600mm f/4.

Some druthers:
- Having the camera attached is nice not a deal breaker
- Must be able to have hoods attached, but can be reversed
- would like to have the stock lens cover on
- give preference to the US airline standard 22"x14"x9"

Thanks in advance.
