Sorry if this is in the wrong Board area.

We are visiting people in the Mystic CT area and I want to identify some good places to photograph wildlife and landscapes. I was hoping that someone might offer some suggestions.

Also, so far I have identified the following and wonder if anyone could recommend any or all.

1- Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center DPNC
109 Pequotsepos Rd, Mystic, CT 06355
2- Coogan Farm Nature and Heritage Center
3- Barn Island Wildlife Management Area (Stonington – 20 minutes from Mystic)
4- Bluff Point State Park, 55 Depot Road, Groton, CT 06340 (15 minutes from Mystic)

Thanks in advance.

If you're going north to Massachusetts, Old Sturbridge Village is an excellent restoration of the Caliber (same Rockefeller developers) as Colonial Williamsburg in VA. It is manageable in 1-11/2 day visit and is education for kids and adults alike. It is at the intersection of Highway 15 and I-90 (mass. Pike). Agree about the Seaport, an excellent venue and photos on teh Cutty Sark Clipper Ship (Just like on the bottle without the sails), alone are worth the trip.

Lots to see and do in that area. The Seaport and Aquarium are very popular, but less so for what you might want to shoot. Another place I really enjoyed is the Gillette Castle and park. Only about twenty minutes from the Seaport, beautiful views of the Connecticut River valley, and the Castle itself is worth the trip.

Several coastal areas around the town of Stonington. It is small enough to walk around and no shortage of older buildings.
Go East to Pawcatuck (Pawcatuck River and dams),CN, cross to RI and south to Watch Hill and Napatree Point. Both East and West of Watch Hill are no shortage of landscapes and bird life.
Have fun.

In addition to those listed.. Take the Essex Steam train from Essex (sp?) Ct. It is in the same general area as Mystic Seaport and the train station is next to the original Witch Hazel Plant (Weather vane is a must photo op). The train meanders through the area and along the Connecticut River to a port where you board a river boat that takes you up the Connecticut river to just below Middletown. It runs in front of the Gillette Castle giving opportunity for some excellent shots of the Castle and land surrounding it from the river. There are also lots of chances for wildlife including Bald Eagles.

Here is the link for their website: http://essexsteamtrain.com/

Just a short ferry ride from Mystic is Block Island, RI. There are so many beautiful things to photograph there.

It all depends on what you mean by "near", since as someone who has spent most of life in the Great Lakes Region, I viewed all of CT/RI/MA to be near to us for the seven years we lived in MA.

Of course, the area is loaded in historic stuff. If what you want is wildlife, and are willing to drive a tad, my wife the birder, and I the photographer, liked the Cape Cod National Seashore {look up Eastham MA}

anywhere in Mystic is wonderful. if you can, delay your trip until the first 2 weeks of October. lived in hartford for the first 28 years of my life (discounting school in England) and must have driven down to Mystic about a thousand times. the town itself was lovely in autumn and the colours just stunning.

so, it doesn't matter where you go, you will be making a bunch of images and falling in love with the place!

If going to Newport, The Breakers (the Vanderbilt "summer place") is Not to be missed. It's what I refer to as a Holy $hit place. Yes it is touristy but there is no place like it. The super rich in the "Guilded Age" had their estates in Newport, and their city mansions in NYC. On long Island there is Old Westbury Mansion. The Phipps estate. Serious money. Not bad just for a summer place.
