You haven't seen the movie "Mystic Pizza"? It was filmed in Mystic, CT. I have eaten at the pizza parlor the movie was named after. I'm not sure if it is still open but back in 1984 they had amazing pizza!

yes, the Pizza Parlor - filmed in mystic ct, it was a very popular coming-of-age film back in the 80's, i believe. however, i do not believe, at the time of filming there was a "mystic pizza" parlor. that may have come after the film, or as a result of the film, but i do not remember one being there on the dock. this may be due to old age and faulty memory.

The pizza place opened in 1973. The movie was released in 1988. The pizza place, though not used for filming, still stands and they play the movie constantly.

Thank you DG. We lived in Charlestown, RI in the early 80's when I was working at Millstone unit 3 in Waterford, CT. I bought pizza at the pizza place in Mystic before the movie came out. It didn't occur to me when I saw the movie later that they used a different location to shoot the movie.

ah, so i somehow missed it in my 1 thousand wanderings there. it must drive the workers bonkers to have that playing constantly. sort of like torture along with the 8 hour shift!

Photocraig, I agree that the Seaport and Sturbridge are two of the best venues in the area. We took our kids to both several times when they were young (now in their mid 40's to early 50's), and the one visit they seem to remember most is when they saw a young boy with an ox on a lead walking down the main street in Sturbridge.

For myself, I like the Seaport best, but maybe that's understandable as I've been around boats since I was a infant, and it's one of the few places that shows how things were done in the early days of "wooden ships and iron men".

I have lived in both Mystic and Stonington Burrough for several years. Both are great walking towns for photographers. Both sides of Mystic River have roads that have public accessibility for landscape/river photos from US 1 (Boston Post Road) south to Long Island/Fisher's Island Sound and Noank Village on the Groton side of the river. Stonington Burrough is a peninsula with easy access to the water for interesting views including the fishing dock (which has good parking). Don't miss the views from the little wild life preserve at the northeast end of Wall Street (which intersects both Main Street and Water Street). There are usually no cars in the little parking area at the preserve. Barn Island, which is east of Stonington, is usually quite free of visitors except at the state boat ramp, (with appropriate signage), at the end of the very narrow access road. Unless you have years to investigate you can keep yourself busy without going outside of these three places for months.

No, I meant Duhhh? the Pizza Parlor as in "Hey, are we all forgetting the movie, Mystic Pizza. It is/was a classic in the genre of American Graffiti. So many posts about nonsense historic sites without mention of the movie. I've seen it about four times, but then, I've seen American Graffiti about a dozen time.

The village of Essex is located at the mouth of the Connecticut River and is a must see. Take the boat trip up the Connecticut river, it will bring you under the swing bridge in East Haddam. You will get some great shots of the Goodspeed Opera House. While in Essex ask for directions to the cemetery. You will have a very good chance at some Bald Eagle shots. At the end of the day enjoy some wonderful sea food.

As a young guy I got the opportunity to stay on boats in Mystic Seaport Marina over night a couple of times. No tourists except others on boats. Got a variety of very satisfactory photos of the old ships and seaport both late in the evening and early in the morning. If your friends have a boat, and that can still be done, it is a remarkable trip to days long gone.

By the way if you get time, there are lots of photo ops in the area in addition to the immediate area of Mystic. There is Hartford CT which has the Carousel Museum, a War Birds museum at or near Hartford Springfield Airport, the old Colt Firearms factory and the village that Colt built for his German workers. In New Haven, there is the Amistad (which is owned in Newport but spends much if it's time in New Haven and the area), Yale Campus and New Haven (which is very old and has a lot of scenic buildings including Schubert Theater (which opened many of the early Broadway hits before they went to Broadway) and Long Warf Sea Port. In the Branford / Guilford area are the Thimble Islands, Chowder Pot Seafood, and if you get as far as Bridgeport, there is the PT Barnum House (pre-Florida mansion) plus other sites.. if in Bridgeport, watch your back as it can be a little rough.
