If it was me, I would go with the 70-200 II.

The 70-200mm f/2.8L II aso gets my vote. There's a reason you see so many pros with this lens. (Not just with Canon but also the Nikon equivalent.)

I have had close to 30 lenses including beauties like 85 f1.2L, 135 f2.0 by both Canon and Zeiss and the 500mm f/4L II ... And if I had to choose only one lens to keep, it would be my 70-200 mm f2.8L II. (Of course that's my preferred focal length on full frame - over wide angle.)

I agree with the recommendations to shoot in RAW so you have maximum control over white balance in PP.

Having said that, when I shot in JPEG before switching to RAW, I used to have fun (and good results) playing around with custom white balance in dark environments by shooting wide open with a 50mm f/1.4 lens and custom white balance set at around 2,500 to 2,900 degrees Kelvin.

I haven't used any of the new a7 cameras but am keeping a watch out for further improvements since I will probably eventually buy one (or more). When I picked one up in a store to get a feel for it, the first thing I noticed (what felt like to me) was an uncomfortable position of the shutter button. I see that on the version II, they have moved it forward. That should be an improvement in my opinion. I hope Sony does the same with the A7r and A7s.

Thanks for your kind words David....I really appreciate it! Love my 300mm...but the 400 would give me more reach and you don't need IS for flight shots. Love the fast focus and and fast shooting of this new camera...it has a hair trigger

Carolina Wings, Thank you for posting the nice shots with your new camera and also the informative details. Can you elaborate on your note about not needing IS for flight shots? If it's because you use a tripod, I understand. If you are hand holding, I would think you'd want to use IS. Thank you again.

OEM camera straps are not very comfortable in use. What brand/model aftermarket have you tried and recommend? Please list pros/cons. Thank you!

I'm a fan of three brands. One is the Op-Tech so popularly mentioned. The padding is very nice - particularly when wearing on your neck with the camera in front of you. It is well constructed. Since I generally don't carry this way, the two or three Op-Techs i have are stored away. I will keep them for when I may want to carry that way.

A second brand, and probably my favorite, is the UpStrap. The reason I like this one so much is that I usually carry on my right shoulder with camera hanging on that same right side. There really is no padding but this thing really grips and doesn't slide off my shoulder. This strap connects to the camera using the standard lugs. I have the UpStrap on most of my cameras and UpStrap shoulder bag straps on several laptop bags.

The third one I like and use on two of my cameras is the BosStrap. This strap connects to just one of the standard lugs on the camera (not on the tripod socket). I use this over my head on my left shoulder with the camera on my right side. I like the way the camera slides up the strap when I raise it to my eye to take pictures. There is no padding but that hasn't bothered me.

I have a 24-70mm. I could put that on my 7D. Would that work?

I think you will get some beautiful images with the longer focal length of your 24-70 lens, say from 50mm to 70mm. My favorite portrait focal lengths on full frame are from 85 to 135. On your 7D, 50mm to 70mm would be similar to 80mm to 112mm, right in that range.

I posted on the other thread how I prefer the UpStrap and BosStrap since I like to carry on my shoulder. To directly answer your question ... If you like to carry your camera in front of you, i recommend you go with the OpTech. The padding is nice & adds a lot of comfort. If you prefer to carry on your shoulder, I recommend you go with the BosStrap (or UpStrap). I have several of all three brands.

My favorites at UpStrap & BosStrap. The UpStrap won't slip off your shoulder. I even buy those for briefcases & other bags. The BosStrap goes over my head onto opposite shoulder. It doesn't use the tripod mount.
