I haven't done many professional infant pics and was wondering what would be the best canon lens for it. Should I use a portrait lens or 50mm?

I generally use my 18-135 zoom. Works well for me because it allows for flexibility.

I have a 24-70mm. I could put that on my 7D. Would that work?

Yes - it still gives you some flexibility in how you shoot the image.

I just shot an infant for some friends a few months ago. I brought my 85mm lens (on full frame) and was wishing I could get closer than the 3 foot minimum focus distance. Next time I think I might try a 12mm extension tube on the 85mm. A macro lens would have been great too but I don't own one...yet.

A prime lens in the near telephoto arena would be my choice...something between an 80mm, and 135mm, probably.

Don't want to be critical, but you are taking "professional baby pics", and you ask what lens to use? I don't understand that.

I didn't say I was taking professional baby pics. I haven't done that. So I was asking a simple question of other pros experience.

Didn't mean to be offensive. Thought I asked a fair question with regard to the word the "professional". I misunderstood your intent---I apologize.

I'd use my 50mm

Just like any other photography, the lens choice is determined by the effect you want to achieve.

There is no "right" lens.

There is a reason for using shorter lenses, mid, and long lenses.

The question is; what "effect" or "look" do you have in mind?

This is a perfectly valid question to ask considering this from your profile:

Doing photography professionally since 2007 when I retired.

That's 7 years of pro photography.

I had to wonder myself actually since there is no real right or wrong answer to this question...it's basic.

Nikon makes a 135 that front and back focus. It does a wonderful job in portraitures. Was wondering if canon makes anything like it?
