Hi Gang,
It's that time of the year & I get to pick out my gift from the hubs. I am wanting to expand my arsenal with a "telephoto" & as usual can't make up my mind!! I have about 2500.00 to get to spend.

I will be shooting with & adding to:
Canon 6D - Lenses:
Canon 60D - Ef 75-300 1:4-5.6 III EF 50 1.8
Canon EXTI - EFS 18-55
40mm - EF 24-105 mm 1.4 L IS
EF 85mm
FS 18-135 mm
Canon 540 Ex II Flash
so any recommendations would be very helpful !! I shoot 95 % of time with the 6D (which I LOVE LOVE LOVE ) And I shoot a variety of Weddings Portraits & some Indoor Studio (newborns) & for personal pleasure wildlife & grandchildrens sporting events . Thanks so much for your help & advice !!! Love to all Jazzy !

The new 100-400 looks like it's going to be pretty nice.

You can put a 2X behind the 70-200 2.8 II and it will do everything thing the 100-400 will do - slightly bigger and heavier than the 100-400 MK I - and more expensive.

That's a nice Christmas budget you have! I see you don't have anything higher than 300mm.... how about a mirror lens around 400mm or more? They're nifty for great moon shots.

Thanks imagemeister !! I know the 70-200 is a BIG upgrade to it's previous model & all the reviews are great mostly but I didn't have any reviews to go with on this one as it hasn't been released.

If it was me, I would go with the 70-200 II.

Jazzy, don't know what outdoor sports you mean or how big the playing field is.
The new 100-400 should be really nice for outdoors, but it's its no good for anything indoors.
The 70-200 could be used for weddings also or light indoor sports, but outdoors gets short pretty fast.
If you ever plan to do any nature, it's too short.
The 70-200 will take either extenter and should work well for a little extra reach. The 100-400 gets a little longer with a 1.4 but you need to tape the pins to keep AF. Some have reported that it keeps AF on their 6D's but it's not supposed to according to Canon.
If you can use it for weddings, the 70-200 might be more useful. If you don't use it for weddings, then get the longer 100-400.
My 70-200 is my least used lens since I use faster primes for my indoor work. My 100-400 is one of my most used lenses since I do nature. Good luck. ;-)

sb, the differences in sports and wildlife shooting can mean a 50mm is not wide enough, to an 800mm being too short!!
Wrestling is very different than football and giraffes are very different than humming birds.
I was VERY general without more specifics! ;-)

There is a lot to be said about the versatility of the 70-200 and a T/C. Even with a 2x T/C you would be using an f/5.6 all the way out to 400mm. That is what the 100-400 offers. The EF70-200mm f/2.8L II is one of Canon's best sellers, and it offers a high degree of usefulness. Yes, it is heavy. Some of us feel it is worth the weight. For the amount of money you mentioned you can get out to a focal length of 400mm @ f/5.6. To do the same distance at f/4.0 the price quadruples! Photography is all about the numbers.
