On Cape Cod, we had about 65% max of the eclipse. Felt like a night with full moonlight here at Herring Run. Matt

Matt if you didn't mention about the three ducks I probably would have missed them. That being said objective shot. B/W works well with this shot.

Thanks Frank. I appreciate your comments. Matt

Yep, took a while to find the little blighters! They are rather incidental to the shot - but maybe that's not a bad thing as its all about habitat?

They were hiding and I wanted to respect that. Thanks for the comment. Matt

Hi, Matt,
The blown highlights have been mentioned, but beyond that, I find the image to be incredibly "busy"...and am driven to find one of the "images within the image"

Here's one example, focusing mainly on one sort of grassy plant and its reflections.

?..just another guy's approach....

I agree Dave. Here's my latest version effort. Matt.

Hi, Matt,

Had I been working the same scene I'd have tried to include a much lower perspective in which the grasses broke the horizon and tied the sky and water together. Not sure it would have worked, but it would have been good to include among alternatives.

edit...a personal opinion is that the horizon ALWAYS be broken by a foreground element / C.O.I. whenever possible!

Dave

Excellent advice Dave. Will go back and try

I'll be the first to admit that it does not work for lots of images; but something about your image made me think of the invert tool. Glad you liked it.
Erich

On my computer screen, the photo has a brown cast. Did you do that? Or is it my screen? It is really a haunting image this way. Very cool. I like it a lot. Thank you. Matt

Yesterday I posted about wanting to do head shots (http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-480114-1.html). Today I got my first subject that was not a family member.

I prefer the last one; I like the contrast of the darker blue with her hair and skin. It is more flattering; she seems to fade into the background with the lighter top. Good work. Matt

Pity the ducks are gone. You gave us such a fun puzzle with the last one. As for this photo, I see the plants as the main focus point in this composition. You might want to adjust contrast or selectively change the lighting to make them more prominent. I'm really happy to see you are having such a good time with that camera. It's great to vicariously share in your enthusiasm. We are also being treated to views of Cape Cod that most people never see. At the end of the summer you might be interested in putting them all together in an album to commemorate your summer's shooting.

Thank you again, Erich. I will try what you suggest about contrast and lighting in a week or so. Our eight-year-old grandson is arriving tomorrow for a week; I doubt I will get much time for posting. I do make a Blurb book at the end of each summer; and I notice the children pick them up from time to time and thumb through. No one will want my Lightroom files. Matt

I used Photoshop (adjustments>invert) to change the whites to blacks and vise versa. I think it sticks with the minimalist theme that you presented; but, to me, it also makes the grasses more prominent because they are bright white. I tend to like this treatment; but many people hate it. I'd be interested in your take. I think it looks best in download.
Erich

Wild Erich. I really like it. Thank you for introducing me to this feature. I will look on my iMac later tonight and reply again. Many thanks for your interest and mentoring. Matt

This has a really nice minimalist feel to it. I really like that there are different areas of grass and a nice horizon line that is high in the frame. You did a really nice job of getting our attention with the grass in the foregrouund and then we can move on toward the horizon where there is more grass. In between There is an open expanse of water which I like very much. To my eye the whites are a bit overwhelming, and the separation between the grass and the water could be more dramatic. As an exercise in what is possible, I worked the photo in a completely different way which, I think, keeps the minimalist feel; but enhances the contrast between the water and the grasses. I used the invert tool in PS. With your permission, I'll post it in this thread.

I went back to Herring Run this morning after last night's torrential rain to see what treasures awaited. Here's one. I think they are water lilies but I am not sure. There were, however, no Mallards -- and no people -- around. Had the place to myself. Matt

OK, Matt, I was about to give up but thought if others could find them I ought to be able to. Neat shot and I enjoyed it one I spotted the Mallards!

Thanks. It was a magic moment, and somewhat special and almost private to be there alone with them. Matt

I had to really hunt. But as stated above, once found, they're easy to see. That's a really neat image.

Thank you. They were easier to spot while there. They were pretty dozy and didn't stir even with me moving around. Matt

Wow, they really blend in. Had to go to download and then really look to find them. Of course, once I knew they were there, it was easier to spot them. Camouflage is sometimes quite amazing.

Thanks Erich. It was a magical moment. I went back this morning after torrential rains last night and will post another later. Matt
