I think I know where your coming from after reading your thoughts on photography. I too have had a waning interest in making what is now a effort to take photographs. After spending a lifetime being fascinated by photography (I'm 85.5 years old) and I'm still fascinated by the new equipment that is being introduced every day -- but doubt that I will ever go out and buy any new equipment. I guess we sometimes lose interest in some things and move on to other interests as our remaining abilities allow us to. I spent 17 years in the photography business (mostly weddings and portaiture) and retired just when digital cameras started replacing film, at the age of 60. No -- I could not see myself doing this business today. Times change and so do we.

I think you're right about Photoshop taking over the world. My camera club has a category for creative art. The photos in the creative art category can be heavily manipulated in Photoshop or other software. Now, people enter these heavily manipulated photos into categories that should have just minor adjustments made to them. I wish the judges at the critique nights and end of year competition would call them out on that and reject the photos.

I agree totally. You hit the nail on the head.

8k and 16k frame capture will be the future of photography. Video will kill still photography, just like it killed the radio star.

Video has already done that, like decades ago...

The amazing thing about photography is that average, random, unremarkable people can own the best equipment.

And they can still churn out dull, ho-hum photos. I know a guy who HAS to manipulate ever image in Photoshop and it is always so obvious he did. The thing is, they are still not very good.

Yes, we are all doomed - sell your photo gear, build a bunker, buy 3 years worth of food, then wait for the Adobe bloodsuckers to come and triple the subscription price ....

Right to the bin with this lot . Im never going to be any good with it anyway.
Whats a photo,image,picture,shapshot,portrait,print,shot anyway.
The dark side insidiously has fallen among us no one was left untouched.

DIGITAL small word but oh so vast a concept .. Why when people like Bert Monroy, can conjure up from the ethereal cosmos Times square. Without pressing a button .
Who am I to think I can portray some vision of a sunset .

When I did film I spent more time in the Dark than I care to tell. I LOVED it. Taking the photo, for me, was always just the beginning. A sad fact is that I have lost many friends over the years because they spent so much time over those trays of chemicals. I count myself lucky that I escaped unscathed (at least, so far). I applauded digital when it was introduced because now I could manipulate images in the light, with no chemical interaction.
NO my friend, you are wrong, photography has taken a giant leap forward and I am happy to announce that I am ALL IN.
Artist's for thousand's of years have been able to CREATE their images, well, now we can more easily do so to.

Take another look at that photo in the glossy mag. I bet it was an awesome location, in a perfect light, at the right time of year to be there, and the photographer made sure the composition was spot on. He or she also did a lot of research (or just got plain lucky) to determine that was the time and location to photograph. Photoshop can not produce silk purses from sows' ears. The raw material is still important to the resulting product.

When I see an image that is overly processed or totally created as graphic art and it "bothers me" my mind just rejects it and I move on to something that will please me. Some abstractions I love, some snap shots bore me to death. And I'm talking a bought other peoples images or photographs. For my own it is mostly a work in progress and I'm rarely happy with an image. Generally striving for perfection I never reach. But the journey is amusing or fun or challenging.

You have to have an epiphany about photography. Your photography should be for YOU - unless you plan on being a professional - in that case, God Bless. I love traveling, but I long ago decided that I do not need to end up with a better photograph of some famous place that has been photographed by millions of photographers - many of them better than I. I have to do photography for my own enjoyment. I do a lot of wildlife photography. My opinion is that a third of that is having good equipment and knowing how to use it, but another third is simply having the patience of a saint (which I don't...) and the other third is being in the right place at the right time. So often I do not go to the wetlands to "do photography". Sometimes I just go "to take a nice walk but I think I will take my gear...just in case".

Hello Jaksfotos!

Who you upset with? Photography is your imagination coming to life, always have and be that way in the future, and that the raw facts. Enjoy your creativity man.

No, photography is capturing a slice of life as it happens before your eyes. Adding subtracting major portions a shot is a lie, a FIGMENT of a persons imagination, not an extension of it. Taking out a dust spot or fixing a small blemish is one thing but the amount of modification we see in "photographs" is not a true representation of a real world view.

It’s not about competing or comparing yourself to someone else. It’s about enjoying the process and feeling proud of a unique and creative outcome. When I go out to take pictures, whether I’m traveling or in my own back yard, I have an opportunity to make something interesting and unique. Yes, there are plenty of photographers with more technical ability. But, what I do is unique to me. I continue to learn and grow. What I compare myself to is the work I’ve produced in the past. I can plainly see that I have grown because I want to go back in time a do it again with a slightly improved result.
