It's an Eastern Garter Snake. They are in different shades of green & some are more brown.

That's what I try telling my wife! She keeps her "snake shovel" near the kitchen door. If any come around and I don't catch and relocate them first, they will have a very bad day!

The Garter snakes have a stripe down the middle of the back and are all harmless to humans - several species are scattered around N. Am. This Eastern Garter Snake is widespread in eastern N. Am. If you pick them up they usually emit a foul smelling cloacal fluid.
