Its Petey the snake, he lives in a pit and loves to hiss.
One day Petey was hissing in his pit and his mother came home.
Pete if I told you once I told you a 1000 times no hissing in the pit.
If you wanna hiss go out side the pit to hiss.
So Petey slithered outside the pit and started to hiss
Be he loved hissing in a pit,
He slithered into Mrs Pots Pit and began to hiss.
Mrs Pots came home and said who's hissing in my pit
Its me Mrs Pots Im hissing in your pit.
Petey the snake if you wanna hiss in a pit go home and hiss in your own pit.
well Petey the snake slithered home and told his mom That Mrs Pots hollered at him for hissing in the pit.
His mom said that mean old Mrs Pots I can remember when she didn't have a pit to hiss in.

Yes I can tell that story in 30 seconds or less, sometimes I can extend it a minute by adding lines.
I told that story every day, sometimes 20 times a day for 10 years its burned in my brain
( I was selling fake snakes at the time)
The things we do to make a buck

Could it be a checkered garter snake? Perhaps Sharpie's Croatian Super Model has been moonlighting in New Jersey, and lost a garter during a shoot!

Another vote for a checkered garter snake, the head looks very much like a garter snake's head. The colours look a little bright on my iPad.

I think you are right about it's being a checkered garter snake. Sorry about the colors. I intensified the colors a bit, but I think not enough to change the overall look. This was sighted in New Jersey (I looked up the snake & found that it's found in portions of six southwestern U.S. states: California, Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Texas; Thamnophis marcianus also has an extensive range through portions of northern and east-central Mexico.

Maybe it was a let-loose pet.
