The Garter snakes have a stripe down the middle of the back and are all harmless to humans - several species are scattered around N. Am. This Eastern Garter Snake is widespread in eastern N. Am. If you pick them up they usually emit a foul smelling cloacal fluid.

Thanx!

Garters can be very dangerous! Especially if you are not married to the person wearing it!

They're generally quite docile, especially if you feed them dollar bills. On the other hand, being married to one of that specific variety can be extremely dangerous!

A lot of people believe that but...we've had years of protection in our horse barn from two black rat snakes that were six feet plus. They will kill poisonous snakes. Most folks think only the King snakes do that but the black ratsnake does it also. And I have a photo of my wife holding one of them out for a photo...totally docile. The snake, that is!

Most need to be fed a lot more than dollar bills. These days some are not happy with increments of $100.00.
