My wife and I spent a day there in February. Enjoyed walking around Roma Norte and Coyoacan neighborhoods. Frida Kahlo museum and Coyoacan market were highlights. Stumbled into a native American dance event that any photographer would love. Ubered around. Never felt unsafe in these places.

My wife and I toured the Mexican countryside with Naturalist Journeys back in Feb this year. More serious birding than we'd anticipated but we learned lots from our excellent guides and other lovely people on the trip. I was welcome with my camera - birders don't hurry either. Cost was very reasonable given high quality guides, small group, and simple but authentic and excellent food.

I travel with an Android tablet with a 512GB internal card, and outboard (via USB) SD card reader for the cards out of my camera. Use Lightroom CC for Android.

I have the Sigma MC-11 adapter for a Canon 70-200 f4 and my Sony a7iii and a6300. The MC-11 works reliably; autofocus is very good.
