‘High quality” and “fast” aren’t generally terms that go together when you’re talking scanners. There’s a trade-off there. I use an Epson V850 to scan photos, and it produces excellent results, but it’s time consuming. You’re scanning one print at a time, and the higher the resolution, the longer the scan time. I tend to focus on the prints I really want to save, and get I quality scans with the V850. Any post-scan work that needs to be done (if not handled by the scanning software) can be accomplished in LR or PS.

I’m curious . . . Why an M-P/Type 240 rather than one of the newer M series? Like you, I’ve been through most of the previous Leica Ms (starting with the M3) and currently shoot an M10-R. In my view, the M10-R is pretty much the “perfect” Leica rangefinder. I’m currently out in Arizona with the M10-R (left the Leica Q and the Nikon home), and I love it. Rangefinders aren’t for everyone, but that’s what I learned on, and I still enjoy that style of photography. And Leica lenses are still world class. So, I completely understand the itch . . . wouldn’t blame you if you decided to scratch it.

Beautiful picture, Lonewolf. Thanks for posting it here — I rarely look at the Gallery.

You might want to consider using a monopod . . . and it can do double duty as a walking stick!

I use a Hasselblad 501cm with the new 100c digital back (and occasionally with the film back). I use the 45 deg. prism viewfinder with it, so the image is right-side up. The Hasselblad/Zeiss lenses are fantastic, and it is a lot of fun to shoot. It's great to get back to the simple basics once in a while.

Another thumbs up for the Epson P900. I print only occasionally, but it puts out high quality prints and the inks don’t dry out.

Good point however, the Q3 is a fixed lens. Can't remove it. That's why I'm buying it.

It’s a “fixed” lens on a 60 MP camera and you can electronically “zoom” (i.e., crop) from 28mm to 35, 50, 75 or 90mm. Even at 90mm there’s still plenty of pixels tp play with.

That’s why it’s my preferred travel camera. A single, high quality Leica lens with lots of versatility.

I'm a Nikon Z8 user and also have (and love) the Leica Q3 (had a Q2 previously). In my view, the Q3 is pretty close to the "perfect" travel camera. Some quick thoughts:

a. You'll want to get the thumb support for the Q3. Greatly improves the ergonomics of the camera. I also have the Leica half-case for the Q3, which helps protect the camera.

b. When you receive your Q3, make sure the firmware is updated. I think Ver. 1.3 is the latest one. There have been a couple of software issues with the Q3 that have been addressed in the updates.

c. It's a simple, straightforward camera to use -- that's the beauty of it. The menu structure is uncomplicated and easy to navigate. You can customize the menu to set up your "Favorites" at the top of the menu structure, which is very convenient.

d. The Q3's AF is excellent -- although not up to the standards of the Z8/Z9. I have used different AF modes, but have found that the Q3's "Intelligent AF" seems to work well in most settings.

e. Just use the camera and you'll get accustomed to it very quickly. It's very intuitive.

Congratulations on being able to get one -- they're still hard to find. And have fun with it. It's completely different than the Nikon experience, and it's a lot of fun to use.

My use profile is similar to yours. I decided to move from the D850 to the Z8 earlier this year, and I have been pleased that I did. Along with the move to the Z8, I switched to the Z line of lenses, and I do think I see a modest increase in IQ in most settings. From reports that I read, the Nikon F-mount lenses generally perform well on the Z8 with the FTZ adapter, but I preferred to switch over entirely to the Z system. The autofocus on the Z8 is every bit as good as the Z8 and probably better. I prefer the form factor on the Z8 over the D850 -- just a bit smaller and fits the hand better. Overall, the versatility and capabilities of the Z8 are impressive.

The D850 is a wonderful camera, and it served me well. That said, the Z8 is what finally pushed me into the mirrorless world, and I am very glad that I made the move. There are bean counters who will argue that the marginal improvement is not worth the cost (depending on your circumstances), but sometimes life is about more than just beans . . .

I'll start with two suggestions:

1) Painted Rocks (near Munising -- best seen from one of the ferries in Lake Superior)

2) Tahquamenon Falls

Nichols Arboretum near campus. There are a number of places further north in Michigan (3+ hours away), but the Arboretum in A2 is a great place with a camera.

Q3. I guess you can live with the one focal length for everything you will shoot with it?

Actually, the Q3 is a 60 MP camera with a 28mm lens that electronically "zooms" (crops) to 35, 50, 75 and 90mm. The electronic zoom yields surprisingly good results at those longer focal lengths. That's why it's such a good street camera -- there's a lot of versatility in that "one" lens.

Having just moved from a D850 to the mirrorless Z8, I decided to sell my F-mount lenses for the newer Z-mounts. Optically, the newer Z-mount lenses are generally better than their predecessors (esp. the "S" line). It's hard to make generalizations -- you really have to compare "apples to apples" -- but I'm impressed with the performance of these Z-mount lenses. I prefer not to use the FTZ converter. Is it worth it to make the upgrade? Depends on your budget. I'm glad I made the changeover, and I'm not looking back.

I traded in my Q2 for the new Q3 a few weeks ago, and I am extremely pleased with it. In my view, it’s the ideal travel camera. Higher MP resolution and better autofocus system; great Summilux lens. I know they’re hard to find right now, but it’s worth the wait.

I use my Nikon Z8 for other situations, but the Q3 is a great street camera.
