Fabulous reference to the Lightroom Dashboard program. Nice to have.
I use my RF 24-105 the vast majority of the time. The second most was my EF-24 which is part of my lightweight travel set. I use them both on my EOS R, the latter using Canon's adaptor.

And thank you for the reference. Sincerely appreciated.

Burkphoto--Agreed. It's just not a problem for me. And it keeps my aspirations alive that I will come back and work on the photos I've already taken.

Thanks for the points.

Morning Star makes an excellent point that resonates with me. I shoot to have the maximum information available. I continue to learn the possibilities of post processing. I stick to LR. There’s more there than I will ever learn to use. But a am able to produce nice images that give me both pleasure and satisfaction. And I have developed a very easy protocol for exporting JPEGs that meet my needs. This works for me.

Happy New Year. May you all find the system that works for you!

Actually, if you look closely, he did have camera equipped with a flash in some situations.
He clearly is a master photographer. He knows how to adapt his equipment and technique to capture what he sees. It’s something all we photographers should work to achieve. Some of us will just be more successful.

We have a pair of eagles that nest in our neighborhood each year for quite a few years. It's very unusual to see them sitting together. I was just lucky to notice them one afternoon, grabbed my camera and tripod and snapped off a few images. This is my favorite. I hope you enjoy it.

Canon EOS R with a Canon EF 400mm F:5.6 lens using a Canon 2x extender. So that translates to
800mm at F: 11 with ISO 640.

Enjoy.

I have three drives: LR library, LR backup, and Imported photos each on an external hard drive. I back up the LR library drive in the cloud using Backblaze. Yes it does have an annual fee but it's worth it to me to have the security of off site back up.

I would also recommend a carbon fiber tripod. I had an aluminum tripod but now have the Manfrotto 055CX3 carbon fiber tripod. It's lighter and dampens vibration better than aluminum. In tap tests, carbon fiber tripods stop vibrating in a fraction of the time it takes aluminum to stop vibrating. It's going to be a little more than your $300 budget though. Here are two great carbon fiber tripods with lever lock legs:

This is an excellent set of recommendations. I have both a carbon monopod and tripod. I recognize that some have cost limitations but I would want to encourage you to see if you can find a carbon item. Perhaps a used tripod?

I have multiple Eneloop batteries in various sizes. I've never had one fail. I use them is all different devices. I don't think you can go wrong with them.

I had no trouble locating them on Amazon.

Good luck.

I’ve used both Carbonite and BackBlaze. I’m using BackBlaze now. Easy to set up. Reasonably priced for unlimited quantity.

I suspect most homeowner or renter policies can cover camera gear. My policy is with Oregon Mutual. I’ve had a policy with them for over fifty years! What more can I say.

I have my camera gear—primarily my cameras and lenses—covered under my home owners policy. They are individually listed and I pay an additional fee for that. I can’t even tell you how much but the piece of mind is priceless.

You'll have to install the LR software and then replace the new LRCAT file with your existing LRCAT file (that is, the entire "Lightroom" folder containing the LRCAT file). After that, if all the image files have all the same locations, LR will not know it resides on a new computer.

If you've created any presets and haven't updated the LR parameter to store these in the same location as the Catalog, you'll have to find and copy these files from the old equipment and copy to new. LR has a 'find' option in the parameter area to open a Window that shows you where your Presets are located.

I've upgraded machines at least three times over the past ten years and followed this general process each time. It works fine. You just may need to "point" the LR on your new machine to where the catalogues are stored. It's really quite slick. And it you have any problems Adobe can help you.

I have a similar setup. But I do use a different protocol to get my images into LR. Actually, there are two subroutines I use. The first is to download the images from the card directly to my desktop. Then I import them into LR (where all the catalogues and images are stored on one or more external drives.) The second variation is to simply plug the card into the reader and then go to LR for import. You can then locate the source using LR's options. Both of these work fine. I've been using this system for more than ten years. Check it out.

The 5D would be my choice too. But when I went to pull the trigger, I bought an EOS R instead. It came with an adapter to use my Canon full frame lenses. I've never looked back. Plus the EOS R is less expensive than the 5D. Just a thought for your consideration. The 5D will be fine too.

Good luck. Let us know what you decide.
