Peter Souza: The Way I See It

To all who watched his documentary last night, was anyone struck by the lighting in his photos? There was so much dynamic range in his photos, and they were so evenly lit, regardless of whether they were interior or exterior shots. It did not appear that he was using a on-camera flash, and there was no if any studio type setup. Does anyone have an idea how he achieved his beautiful results, accepting the fact that he is an extremely gifted “people” photographer?

He's a Canon man.

Of course, but his talents transcend his tools

No it was the camera. If you buy a Canon you will get results exactly like his.

Oh I should also mention you will also need his years of experience.

Why are the Nikon folks not speaking up?

Repetition. The more often you shoot in any location the easier it is for you to dial in the camera settings that match the lighting requirements. He had been shooting for many years at the Whitehouse and most likely could tell you what any particular rooms lighting is like.
That and talent. He didn’t get to be a presidential photographer because he’s mediocre.

Speak out about what? The man's not a great photographer because of the brand of camera he uses.

Speaking up about what?

Here is my (Nikon user) comment. I say use the gear you like best. If you like Canon, then use Canon. If you like Sony, then use Sony. We are living in the golden age of camera tech. It's foolish to argue about brands when it comes to results. They are ALL good cameras and any one of them, when handled properly, is capable of delivering stellar results. It's the nut behind the lens that makes all the difference with the results.

John, I think they were just poking at the Nikon users out of fun. Everybody beats up on me because I shoot Oly! I am sure Souza could take my old junky cameras and make magic come out of them. As for me, they seem defective!

Who is "They"?

I use Oly too and I love my OM-D. Nobody else needs to say they use Oly for me to be happy with it. After all, they're the ones who are missing out ;)

All my nikon and canon buddies at my camera club. They are way better at all aspects of photography than me. They are more dedicated, studied, etc. I am kind of a vacation photographer. I kinda muddle through, but in my camera club, they (along with other brand users are) are excellent. My only defense is I blame the equipment!

And looking at your web site, there must be something wrong with my Olys. Yours seem to be working quite well. Most excellent!

I think us Nikon folks are just about burned out by the unnecessary and quite uncalled for attitude toward our choices on this site.

Thank you for clarifying! And thank you for the compliment. ☺️

RWebb, most of all have fun (advice from Joe McNally). Double that for us hobbyists. Sounds like you are having fun and that's the good part! Keep it up.

Maybe some. Certainly not all.

Why? Does it require the approval of someone here on UHH, or elsewhere, for you to enjoy your camera?

Ok, I approve! I think you made a fine choice!
