My first digital camera. Birthday gift from wife in 02 and loved it.. Used it for years until I upgraded in 15. Was still working perfectly when I put in on the shelf across from my. also retired FE-2. Great starter camera.

Wow, never had this many responses to my previous posts. Thanks to all the hoggers who took the time. My idea in potentially upgrading had been to replace the 24MM lens, which I almost never use these days, with one that would give me the same focal length while retaining the 2.8 aperture, covering the 35-70 range and updating to a lens that would be more compatible with a newer camera than the D-100 and D-7000 I previously used. I'd also hoped selling the two older lenses would largely cover the cost of nice used 16-80. But after checking selling prices for my old lenses, that's not going to happen. It looks like an upgrade, which I would still like to do, will have to wait until I'm a bit more flush.

Wondering if the Nikon 16-80mm 2.8-4E would be a good replacement for the older 24mm 2.8 and 35-70mm 2.8 AF Nikkors I've been using for years. My primary camera is a D500. I'm assuming the 4 means it has a variable aperture. Thanks in advance.

My camera club has scheduled a show in the spring and members have been invited to submit prints for display with an idea toward selling. I am considering these two photos so far, one a night shot of Venice the second a close-up of a flower display. Since I don't have a printer, I will be sending these out. The Venice photo probably could use some further fine tuning ( I have Lightroom Classic) while I am satisfied with the flower display as is. One person suggest a textured paper for the Venice photo to make it resemble a painting, an idea that intrigues me. What paper and finish would accomplish that goal? And what would you recommend for the flowers. Although I have been taking photos for a long time, I haven't had any printing done since my film days. Thanks.

My somewhat meandering path to photography started in high school, when a friend who was taking pictures for the yearbook tipped me off that the school darkroom was a good place to smoke cigarettes, because the door locked and you could turn on the red light indicating that developing was in process, keeping any teachers at bay. There I learned the basics of black and white processing. After graduating college with a journalism degree, I got a job as a stringer at a daily newspaper, which involved photographing news events in additon to writing stories. My Dad purchased my first camera, a Minolta 201. Apparently I had an eye for composition, as the editors often played my photos prominently and the regular photographers, who did all the darkroom work, told me that they didn't mind developing my film, because at least the pictures were in focus and well composed, compared to many of the other reporters. Soon added a telephoto and wide angle lens to my arsenal. Worked my way into a full-time job, which also involved quite a bit of photograpy. Set up a darkroom in the attic of a house I shared with a couple of other reporter/photogs. Eventually moved on to another paper, which involved more writing and less photography, but by then I was firmly hooked. Switched to digital in 2002, retired in 2014, joined a camera club three years ago and now spend much of my free time taking photos.

Recently spent 10 days there with my wife and came back with more photos than I could realistically post here. I'll limit it to these. And a big Thank You to the hoggers who previously recommended purchasing an 18-200 mm lens for my D500. Used it almost exclusively.
