Having access to the base Lab and a NCO that took me under wing (1959), I'd been less than smart to not have been interested in takin' pictures. The cameras used were a signature away and learning the ins and outs of lab work was a walk in the park. You can't beat free, in spite of getting stuck developing lots of pictures for the photographer showing me the ropes.
Having had an F4 for as long as I can remember and playing with film.. keeps you on your toes and IMO, forces improved composition and with the practice keeps picture taking an always improving hobby. pc

I have purchased lenses from eBay and have no issue. Read the condition of the lens before buying. Some of the best lenses come from Japan as they take care of the equipment better than most US users

Amen.. for the above statement!!

Bid on a lens that have their end time.. early AM or late PM (less competition.)
Try not to bid until the end of the auction (last seconds.)
BE PATIENT and DO NOT get in a rush. Bid only on a clean example of what you are looking for.
Research prices on completed auctions to get an idea on
how much you will need to pay and keep control of your bids.

Have some fun.. pc

I noticed that the Nikkor 300mm f4 has been mentioned a few times. I have the 300 f4D, which is a Gold Ring lens that is manageable to shoot hand held. It has a few flaws, like a sliding lens hood that gets loose after a while. I bought mine new several years ago, but have seen nice used ones for less than $450. This is the framing equivalent of right at 450mm on a DX camera. Performs very well. Might be worth looking at, as suggested.

Nikkor's 300mm f4 w/D700, ends up working (for me.) I've come to the understanding that trying to take pic's of birds, after decades, is a learning curve that NEVER ends. TC 1.4B added into this mix, only takes this to another level. I have decided after several decades of trying to master this journey, I will never get to the end of this journey (but, I keep trying.) pc

After too many years of being a gear whore (and retiring ='s less $) I can only wish the lottery would come my way. So, after reviewing Nikons D700 thru the D850 series with a number of examples by more than a few friends, funny.. how most all of the group, preferred the D700 examples. Go figure.
If I'm needing to use something with more resolution than the D700, I'll be renting until my ship comes in.

I have bought 3 of these so far with absolutely zero problems. I have one 2TB and two 4TB.

I have ALL my thousands of digital photo files on these (plus many other kinds of files). I use them all to backup my photo and other files.

School was a 3 generation affair (then a new one) which lasted for a few decades (closed due to concern about the kids health [it was falling down].) Water was courtesy of a sulphur well. Finally got indoor plumbing in the early 60's. Cutting the yard was with a push mower [2.5 acres]. Snowball supplied all the milk and butter and w/chickens all over the yard [eggs and the Sunday meal]. Typical life growing up in the 50s [I'd guess].

People in general are lazy. Unless they are truly interested in photography, they don't want to learn how to use a DSLR and the convenience of the cell camera finishes the deal. these were the pocket camera point and shoot people before the cell cameras. So nothing really new. Just a shift in the product used.
