Hello Hoggers,
Should I be overly concerned about TSA checks while traveling with 400 ASA B&W and 400 color negative film? Plan on carrying it in my camera bag or carry-on. I have done this many times previously but am now concerned with higher scanning capabilities of the equipment. I don’t want to frustrate the inspector with a request to hand inspect the film if at all possible.
Thanking you in advance for your help and recommendations.

I'm going to try that. I'm tired of fighting with the Epson.

Good luck with the connection

I'm excited that you're able to use it at all. What version of Windows are you on? I'd love to reconnect my scanner!

I am using windows 10. I believe that after installing Vuescsn the Nikon Scan was able to use the drivers of Vuescsn.
Although I have read that windows a 10 has a universal driver that Nikon Scan uses.

Good morning hoggers,
I have been attempting to us the Coolscan with Nikon Scan and Vuescan software. I have read many opinions on both software products and haven’t settled on either one. Being a Nikon shooter I prefer the NFF files produced with the Coolscan, however I can’t use the software reliably. For the life of me do not find where to designate the final folder that the scan produces. Also after scanning a strip of six 35mm negatives the Coolscan starts scanning the strip all over again. I believe that I have checked the respective boxes in the preference section.
What I am trying to set up is a reliable work flow that will make my scanning less frustrating and more reliable.
Frustration is getting the better of me. Please, your suggestions and recommendations.
Thank you very much.

Thank all of the Hoggers for their advice. I may build a light table using LED dimmable light strips and frosted glass.

Thanks, that would work.
The issue I see is when viewing the negatives i see the pixels of the screen.

I did see this one. Do you have any experience with the app?
Thanks, Dave

Hello Hedghogers,
Can you offer a setup or app that will allow my IPad to be used as a light table to inspect negatives with a loupe?
I have found apps that appear to want you to sign away your privacy and agree to be bombarded with adds, so I am not willing to accept their terms.
Thanking you in advance for your reply.

Considering the Vuescsn driver is why the Coolscan now woks, I did not know that.
Thanks for all of your help.

I am using windows 10/64 on a Nikon Coolscan v with the original nikon scan software that now is able to run on windows 10. Along with the Nikon scan I am using Vuescan. I did find a replacement cable in my collection of stuff and it is working better and ordered a new cable with better shielding and chokes. I will see if this is any better. I am not completely satisfied with my scanning, maybe it will be better with more practice. The scanner has been sitting idle for a time, but I have a desire to again shoot and develop B&W film.
Thank you for your help.

Just any USB cable with an A and a B connector would be fine. The "Choke" is the ferrite ring to suppress noise and interference but for the most part it would work just fine without the ring. If you worry you can buy those rings here

Thanks Bebulamar. Do you think that my cable could be the problem with the Communication of the scanner to the computer?
Thanks, Dave

I am trying to obtain acceptable scans from the Nikon Coolscan film scanner without much success. Knowing that the USB cable that connects the scanner to computer has deteriorating outer covering and kinked sections on the shielded cable I thought that this may be part of the problem. The cable that I have is the original - Nikon-US-LS2. I have found that what is offered as original replacements are having similar issues with the outer covering of the shielded cable deteriorating. The cable has a “choke” near the end that connects to the scanner. I believe that this is a shield for interference from other electronics.
So my question is what would be a suitable cable replacement and does the deteriorated shielding and kinked cable have a bad effect on the scans, our is just my scanning technique?
Thanking you for your help,
Dave
