I found this little guy at a street fair in Seattle last summer. He seems awfully proud that he had trained his parents so well!

Just love taking pictures..I would love to learn to take better ones . If any body can suggest a good digital book for beginers I wold love to learn the basics like shutter speeds, lighting, background, etc.

I'm a big fan of Scott Kelby. He's very good at explaining things. He has tons of books. Good luck! There are many people here with good knowledge who are happy to help.

Here's another try to post the photo I told you about . I had to print it and then photograph it to get it to work, then the lighting was off. So once more I took it to photoshop and adjusted the lighting and saved it as a jpeg file and tried it again and voila! It worked.

Wow, that monkey has held up well! If you find you like doing greeting cards, check out GreetingCardUniverse.com. They don't really pay fairly (they take 80%) but a lot of people seem to like it. My card site is called AngelDogCards. I haven't sold much, but I also haven't put much time into it. Some people do really well there. Good job on this one, by the way.

Great shots, MWAC! But what are you doing to that poor girls hair in 1st pic? lol
Better question: How do you bribe the kids to be so patient with you to allow you to take so many great shots? I have a hard time just getting my grandkids to hold still, or even slow down enough to get a shot!

I didn't do that to her hair, her and her sister were playing hair dresser. I did have hair like this when I was about 16, only mine was lighting blue and shaved on one side of my head.

They are actually really good at sitting and letting me practice, we have it down to almost an art. Once a week I set up my little studio, they will sit for 10 to 15 minutes and let me snap away and then they are on their merry little way and I am happy as a lark. It gets to be more of an issue when the weather get's nicer and I want to pack up the car and take some shots, there is more time involved and they try to fight that.

I was the kid of a photographer back in the 60's. She was brilliant. I wish I had been a little more patient and had paid more attention, but I didn't know I was going to grow up to be a photographer, too! :)

Everyone on this list but 2 will disagree with me, but I have the images shot in sRGB JPG to prove it. :-)

Wow... I can see that you are very well respected on this forum, Captain. You have my respect as well... I'm just glad I didn't make this recommendation before you.

Oh you should have - then I could butt out. This whole "RAW is the Holy Grail" thing drives me nuts. Much of what I shoot is, in fact, RAW, but making people think they are doing something wrong or substandard by shooting JPG is just silly.

Thank you for that. Some people I meet make me feel like a scumbag for not using RAW yet. To me, I don't think I need it unless I'm standing in front of the most amazing, career-launching image that I want to capture in the best way possible. Since I don't live in a place that has those kinds of images very often, and I shoot just what I see day to day, I can't imagine that a "fine" JPEG wouldn't be plenty good enough. I rarely print anything larger than a 16 x 20 and haven't seen any quality problems yet.

How do you get bees? I am having a bit of a problen with the little buggers. They won't sit still long enough. This is the best I have done so far.

HAHA! Yes, bees are troublesome little guys. The key to getting good shots of bees is to shoot one HECK of a lot of frames! Eventually, you get one in focus.

I'd like to see more of the shoe, too. Took a while to figure it out. Good general concept, though.

I think we (ok Maybe Me, the OP seems to have an issue with Me) might have drove Billie34 away. Makes me wonder how the OP would have reacted to less than positive C&C on one of their images.

I'm actually very sad, I hate to lose a new member. Every one has information and knowledge we can all learn from. :|

I've read over and over from the beginning and still can't figure out why she went off like that on people who didn't deserve it. Seems like Billie has a large chip on her shoulder for whatever reason.

My boy, Spencer, and girl, Ivy. They make me laugh every day. I have millions of pictures of dogs, because dogs and photoraphy are my passions. But these two live with me. And they're harder to photograph than any other dogs.

Tonight while I had my lights set up I took advantage of my little six-year-old grandson Jorge and used him as a guinea pig for my very first attempt at photographing people under lights. Please pardon his chocolate mustache, he just finished some ice cream.

I improvised a background with a sheet of brown cardboard, using two 105w fluorescent lights without umbrellas or diffusion of any kind.

Nikon D-60
Nikon 55-200 zoom @ 80mm
1/30 sec exposure
f4.5
ISO 400

My question is, how can I set up lights to do a better job. I just put out two lights at random, one on each side. Would a diffuser have helped? Maybe a backlight? Something to make it a bit softer and eliminate some of the shadows?

Feel free to edit and repost anything I submit.

Great first try! And what a gorgeous kid! He has the most beautiful eyes. You did well with the narrow depth of field to throw the background out of focus. Doing that, you can use pretty much ANYthing as a backdrop. No one would ever guess that is just a piece of cardboard.
If you want to soften the light and don't have umbrellas or a soft box, just get a big piece of white poster board and use it as a reflector. Bounce the light off of that and you'll have nice soft light, sort of like window light. I'm no expert, either, but that's my two cents!

What that person did really sucked. That will be HER karma and, on some level, it will bother her and she'll know what she did was wrong. At least one would hope.
People do that all the time on RedBubble with the little "contests" they do in most of the groups. Sometimes the one with the most votes is obviously NOT the best one. Just the one who told people to vote for them. Sad. (Part of me would love to see the crappy image she "won" with) haha
