Oh man good user testimonials and a definite deal at $800 (compared to 24-70 F2.8 for FF cameras). And I love all of my Olympus glass.

Now because of this post I am going to have to figure out how to pay for one of those.

Well, here’s a nice little secret. Because the 12-40 was sold as a “kit” lens with some of the pro level Olympus bodies, there’s generally quite a few used ones available. I bought one on EBay for 420 and like you, blown away by the quality, not just the I but the build of the lens as well. Motivated me to buy the 40-150, same story. Now i just need to buy an em1 mkii, and I’ll be a pro for sure...👍🏻

I am able to set up a camera and strobe, either remotely triggered or triggered by the critter. Question: Will the camera clicking or the strobe cause the skunk to be startled and spray?

This little fella was out in the horse pasture rooting for grubs/bugs. Taken from about 25’, and I was downwind. The skunk knew I was there but showed little concern.I didn’t threaten him and followed him for a little while, but maintained my distance. Even when the horses in the pasture started to chase him, he just ran off.

You won’t regret the 12-40 2.8 Pro. Also look at the 12-100 F4. Check Fleabay for both.

Thanks for that! I love my A7II and ny msin concerns were lens choices and secondly, lightening up a little. The dynamic range and low light capabilities on the Sony are superb but the Olympus ain't no shabby itself. I can always pick up dome small, light legacy glass too. What do you hear on a new Olympus replacement for the Olympics EM5 MARK II? THAT may be worth the wait?

EM5 MKIII is due this fall. I have the E-M10 MKII ,12-40 2.8 and 40-150 2.8. Awesome little camera, good ergonomics with the accessory grip. Glass is superb. New 2x teleconverter is out for use with the 40-150, 300, and the new 150-400 coming out.Availability of the 2x is tough right now, some users have gotten one already, B&H doesn’t have them yet. The EM5 is weather sealed, and Olympus does an outstanding job with that. A like new or excellent EM1MkII can be had from KEH or MPB, B&H for around 1100..the 12-40 2.8 can be bought for under 500, and even less than 400 if you’re watching EBay close. I got mine for 430. An outstanding bargain as its a true pro lens. I’m going to “upgrade “ to the E-M1MkII, unless the MKIII comes out by next March or so at a price under 2k.
I find ETTR with lower ISO works well for keeping noise to a minimum, obviously have to deal with longer shutter speeds but for static subjects does well.

Hi, Mn,
When you lived near Beresford did you ever make the acquaintance of Don Hunter, a cattleman whom I knew as a falconer?

Dave

No, can’t say that I did. I kinda lived in the sticks, 15 miles to vermillion, 15 miles to Beresford. Straight west of the Rory O’Connor house, big farmhouse w a pattern of various color shingles on the roof, on top of a high hill next to 29. That House burned down a couple years after I moved. Lots of stories about that house and Rory, I went through the house once when it was up for sale. Pretty cool ol place, Rory was a piece of work.

Hi, Mncarpenter,

I am delighted...make that thrilled...to hear from someone with obvious feelings for, and experience with the Big Sioux ! Where ‘bouts are you located?

“My spot” on the Big Sioux is at the point of it’s intersection with the east-west state hwy 28 two miles north of the Hamlin County - Brookings county line, and about 2 miles west of the thriving (and continually thinking-of-getting-ready-to-plan-on-growing) industrial-agricultural complex that is the village of Estelline (named for the daughter of the owner of the railroad spur that first connected the village to the rest of the world) (Population approx 690 to 700...around which number it has hovered for about the last two decades).

But I digress....

Hwy 28 crosses the Big Sioux twelve miles west of intersection #150 of Interstate Hwy 29.

I agree. The Sioux is a lovely river for canoeing in the spring, summer, and fall, and for miles of flat and level-as-you-can-get cross-country skiing in winter. No better venue for peaceful contemplation of the muse-of-the moment! No two days on the Big Sioux are ever the same! And during fall and spring migration many a wonderful day of birding can be spent on the Big Sioux river! Early of a spring morning in the wooded banks of the Sioux: no better place to be immersed in the songs of the spring warblers as they settle in for a day of rest and feeding after a hard night’s flight from some point far to the south!

Thanks for looking and for your comments.
You made my day!

Dave
Hi, Mncarpenter, br br I am delighted...make tha... (show quote)

I currently live in Minnesota, and now the Minnesota River is my “Big Sioux “. I grew up on the west coast of Iowa, and fished the Big Sioux around Westfield many times with an older friend, a veteran of WWII, and POW taken on Corregidor. I heard many stories of the Philippines and life in a prison camp, while canoeing or in a Jon boat.
Wasn’t too many years later, I lived in Yankton and then rural Beresford. Grew to love that state , the ability to get to quiet places with few people. I plan to retire somewhere around Yankton in 3-4 years and spend a great deal more time on SD rivers. I was surprised/ glad to see your post, brought back a lot of memories. Thank you

What are the white things in between the studs?

Lath and plaster. Excellent way to finish a wall.. forerunner to drywall, not as flat and smooth. Very quiet and warm in winner, cool in summer

Beautiful photos of a place few appreciate for its beauty. Most think that the prairie is too flat, or boring. Not many experience it long enough to feel the peace of the place. That’s fine by me, fewer people to clutter it up.
Can I ask where on the Sioux? I’ve spent many days and hours canoeing the Sioux, cat fishing and just relaxing. That river holds many memories.

I have the Olympus e-m5 Mark II which also has 16mp. I shot a profile of a cheetah from 70 yards away with my Oly 75-300. You could count the hairs on its head.

Google any of the Olympus visionaries, Robin Wong uses a 16mp MFT-hard to argue with the photo quality

Not likely. There are several more layers of training that go with handling nukes. I do however, prefer the folks handling the nukes, to be trained very carefully, much like this young man. Better than picking it up on the street, by one of those yahoos that hold their handguns sideways.

Everybody hates the Oly Menu but once setup it's not a problem. Spend the time to set it up. You can find literature on setup using Google. And the Supermenu is your friend. Strangely it is not on by default. Turn it on. Use it. You will be much happier.

I’ve owned an E-M10 Mk II for a 3 yrs ( I think). I enjoy the camera a great deal, I also put the accessory grip on it which helped a bunch. I’m a big guy with big hands, and I still enjoy the ergonomics.
I don’t get all the intimidation concerning the menus. There’s a lot there, yes. Best thing I did was just sit at my kitchen bar and mess with it. Have the manual on my IPad and refer to it while fooling with it.. I have PS express and LR CC on my tablet, and fool around with the jpegs, to see which of the raw files I want to develop further on the computer.(Olympus Share on the IPad won’t transfer the raw files to the tablet)

The 14-42 and 40-150rII are decent. I did move to the 12-40 Pro and 40-150Probigger/heavier obviously but better in low light and IQ. I also use the 75-300 frequently, and just recently acquired the 1.4TC. Jury is still out on the TC. All fits in a Think Tank Speed Demon v2, an awesome bag. The whole kit (pro lenses-not the kit lenses which would be lighter) weighs maybe 6lbs.

Some of the features are sweet, star trails processed in camera?? Watch the photo form and stop it when your satisfied. Lots of good info on the Olympus cameras, one of my favorite Oly guys is Peter Baumgartner, Oly visionary and blogger. Lots of landscape/astrophotography.
Junk? Not a chance. You get way more camera than you pay for with the Olympus.

I have a Mk II, it’s a lot more camera than what you’re paying for. Put a 12-40 2.8 on it and it will impress. The 12-40 is pretty cheap used and a huge upgrade to the kit lens at some point in the future.
The available grip is also a nice add on. The camera is pretty sweet to handle and I love the tilt screen vs the articulating style.
