Got my Olympus 12-40 Pro yesterday. Took it out today. WOW The auto focus is wicked fast and the sharpness amazing. Found a mom turkey and her 3 chicks and got catch lights from 50 yards away! Terrible composition on my part. Will post later. Bees with individual pollen grains! I think I’m going to have a lot of fun with this!

I know Jerryc41 was "tongue in cheek" when he stated you are now a professional photographer, but you now know why professional photographers buy such a Pro lens even though they cost a fair bit more. They will up your game in trying to use them to the fullest.

I have had a M43 kit since circa 2005, and undoubtably many of my favorite lenses are Olympus lenses. I have used that kit for travel adventure and more and more, since I bought my OM-D camera body, everyday use.

Currently I have both M43 and Nikon (Full Frame) digital kits. I am trying to get away from having multiple camera formats and was seriously considering switching completely to M43 for my digital kit and investing future money in Oly pro lenses. Then Nikon entered the mirrorless market and I thought perhaps that Nikon's entry into mirrorless might replace my usage of my M43 kit. So far that has not happened.

I had two reasons for keeping my FF DSLR kit: (1) I still shoot film and I can use the lenses for my film work; (2) M43 lens quality was not up to what was available for Nikon FF. Nikon's entry into mirrorless did not help this problem and in fact made it worse. Because to utilize fully the new mirrorless tech would require investing in yet a 3rd lens format (M43, Nikon F-mount and now Z-mount). And there is no Z to F adaptor, so I cannot use Z-lenses with my SLRs.

You are not helping me here with this great report on the Oly Pro lens. One of my most used lenses is my Panasonic 14-45 f3.5-5.6. It is versatile and has good but not Great IQ and it's not extremely fast. But now this?? Now I may no longer be able to use (2) as an excuse to keep my FF digital kit.

I am definitely not getting rid of my M43 kit. Nikon mirrorless is still too big for travel and adventure use. So now I'm thinking again about selling the FF digital gear, and going strictly with M43 for my digital kit.

Or maybe I should just buy another gear cabinet.

But it is a great place to be because we have a lot of incredible choices for camera kits now.

I went Olympus around January 2016 for air traveling and fell in love with the system! So much that all art work are from Olympus system, anyone that says Mu-43 images will never look as good as FF sensors have never printed from Olympus!
Enjoy your gear.

The Olympus Zuiko 12-40 f2.8 Pro is an excellent professional optics. I have a secret, Olympus lenses are among the sharpest lenses I have ever used and this one is exceptional. I just printed at a professional lab a 12x18 inch panorama I made with this lens and my Olympus EP-5 and I was awed by its clarity and resolution.

Enjoy your new lens.

Oh man good user testimonials and a definite deal at $800 (compared to 24-70 F2.8 for FF cameras). And I love all of my Olympus glass.

Now because of this post I am going to have to figure out how to pay for one of those.

Well, here’s a nice little secret. Because the 12-40 was sold as a “kit” lens with some of the pro level Olympus bodies, there’s generally quite a few used ones available. I bought one on EBay for 420 and like you, blown away by the quality, not just the I but the build of the lens as well. Motivated me to buy the 40-150, same story. Now i just need to buy an em1 mkii, and I’ll be a pro for sure...👍🏻

Great tip thank you!

Looks like your only about $1600 away from becoming a pro!
