The very bright light in the background fools the light meter and caused underexposure. Either add a couple stops of +compensation if in auto mode, or if in manual mode slow the shutter speed or open the aperture more.

I own both the 35 and 28 shift lenses and both mount without touching the aperture tab on my D810. Just make sure the aperture ring and tab don't come in contact with the lens mount. There are several different year models that might possibly differ.

I do a lot of adapting to mirrorless, just remember to have an aperture ring on the lens and you can use really inexpensive adaptors and lenses. I have an AF 18-2.8 D Nikkor and Canon Fd 20-2.8, but they aren't all that wide on APSC cameras. Really wide lenses made for 35 mm just aren't really wide enough on crop sensor cameras. Rokinon makes some, but watch for quality control issues.

I teach photography and one of the very first things I do is to show students how to set the diopter to their own eyes. I've hear 'Wow" many times because some have sever seen a sharp image in the view finder. It also helps in cases when the camera AF settings don't work on a particular scene and you need to manually focus. Having to manually touch up focus is common. AF is pretty dumb, usually just looking for contrast in a pre-determaned area of the screen.

The hot spot in the center and the bright reflecting water would probably be the culprit. Meters aren't always right for every situation and that's what exposure compensation is for.

I've had several cameras converted with excellent results. A point n shoot works great, but I've also had a Nikon D40, and D7000 as well as a Canon 40D converted. The live view option on a camera allows you to see the infrared image on the screen before you take the pictures, not all cameras have the option. Mirrorless are naturally live view. My guy listed here wants to know the primary lens to be used in order to set the camera up for that lens. If he doesn't have the lens you'd need to send it with the camera. Everything about dealing with him has been outstanding! I get more keepers from IR than other normal work, probably because of the abstract quality and unusual appearance. My 6 megapixel D40 shots are equal to my D7000 for most purposes. I usually shoot is "saturated color jpegs" and then edit to either B&W or color. Each camera produces different images and playing with settings allows lots of control. There are nearly always surprises and for a 55 year vet
of photography surprise is welcomed at times. I recommend wide angel lenses for focus reliability and some lenses have hot spots and don't work as well and Isaac usually konws what works and doesn't.

A good possibility is that you have accidentally set some minus compensation

I made a very quick and simple edit with Photoshop using Adobe Camera Raw filter. Even more could have been done as a RAW file. There is no perfect exposure and jpeg processing blows out highlights and often doesn't retain much shadow detail. Shooting RAW and processing it is really the only real answer at times.

The 50-1.8 STM is a best buy, don't hesitate! It's better build quality than the previous one, and actually sells for the same or less. Regardless of $$, you can't do much better.

You didn't mention your camera model but the AF-s 70-300 P lens is a sharp and lightweight lens with virtually instant focus. It will only work on the latest model bodies though.

I shot jpegs for years because when I started teaching digital photography at a high school we didn't have the necessary software to convert all of the different RAW files from different brand cameras. When I was finally able to do it I never looked back. I put together a few samples of RAW vs Jpegs I use for students. It really comes down to the fact that Jpegs discard a lot of relevant information which remains in the RAW files to be recovered. Extreme scene contrast is the biggest issue to me. If there is important information in both highlights and shadows it helps to have recoverable detail. The RAW file itself, in order to be viewed in Adobe Camera Raw, is very similar to a Jpeg but the original information is still there to be "recovered." The time spent editing RAW vs Jpegs is insignificant and of very little difference to me after doing it a lot.

~ OK. One of the tools in my photographic bucket is the so-called “Rule of Thirds” for Composition. EVERY image I take is taken with that in mind - EVERY image. Now, part of that process is to determine if this “Rule” applies to the image I’m about to create. Should it be centered?? Sometimes that is a Yes. Should it be Quartered? Maybe. Not ALL the time. Most of my images fall under the Rule of Thirds category. It is what I was taught early on in my imaging endeavor and has stuck quite truly. It’s a classic.
~ Here at UHH, I find that a lot of people know about the Rule of Thirds. I see the axiom “Rules are Made to be BROKEN” thrown around here quite a bit to the point that it seems that CENTERING the subject in the frame is VERY much the norm - for a lot of people/artists here!
~ In my humble opinion, it would seem that in MANY of the images posted here at UHH, many, many would, compositionally, look and have more feeling than the quick CENTER Autofocus sensor can deliver. Focus and Recompose, comes to mind or move to a different sensor. I know, I know - BIF is a total thing in itself so that is not a consideration with this post. To me, BIF is “GET the Dang Shot!!”
~ I'm NOT bashing anyone here - this is just a general observation. Meant to see what others think. I am not judging right or wrong with this. Curiosity.

...Anyways… looking at your OWN images, are you SATISFIED with what you are doing Compositionally with your images?? Is the Subject Centered, the normal composition you desire?
^ Please Post an image!! Let us see your point!! ...Whooohooo!!!

A famous photographer once said that rules are for fools who have no way to be creative. I know the rules but sometimes choose to break them.

I use my own test target, my front porch decor. I can see highlight-shadow detail, resolution-sharpness, color and saturation, and compare center to corners, etc. It's a real life situation and I can shoot in bright or flat lighting according to time of day. This works great for me. I've found even some expensive lenses soft on one side or the other at times. Wide angle lenses have a disadvantage because the center and the sides are different distances from the lens so are rarely as sharp across the entire image. It's down and dirty so to speak but allows me to find the best aperture of lenses and eliminate really bad ones.

While serving in The Army in Vietnam I felt I could do more good with a camera than a weapon. I've never tired of photography and the internet allows me to share it. I do just about every kind of photography, but traveling and recording nature is my greatest joy. I also teach, and getting good folks together for fun and adventure is the icing on the cake. I'll soon turn 76 and photography has helped to keep me healthy and feeling young.

Our friend Terry took us on a road tour of the countryside around New Bethlehem - here are a few shots taken from the car.

Landscape is my thing as I spend as much time as possible in remote, natural areas. I'm from Dallas and generally have to drive about 10 hours or more to get to my favorite places.
