Not wanting to burden fellow Hoggers with a lens recommendation, again, I did some research on the 55-300 VR (I know I'm leaving out most of the alphabet of specs). It's relatively cheap for its quality and I could probably afford it next month. I watched several Youtube reviews and I've got to admit there's something I don't understand.
What the &*$* is the fascination with unboxing? One clown spent 5 minutes of a less than 10 minute video taking the lens out of the box. Que????? Many reviews listed unboxing in the title. I just don't get it.
Finally, in disgust, I went to Ken Rockwell. He confirmed what I'd surmised from photos in the Youtube vids. The lens is a bit soft at full extension, but he added the final nail in the coffin of that lens selection, slow autofocus. I decided to adhere to his recommendation for the 70-300 VR. I'll have to save a little longer, but I think it's the better lens.
Anyone who uses either lens is more than welcome to reply.
Rick
My only theory is self-absorption. These are people who are enamored with themselves and their ability to make a video.

You refer to two lenses but (and maybe I missed it in your post) what camera system are you talking about, Nikon, Canon, or other?
Dennis
First thing first, like you I cannot understand the fascination with opening a box. I believe some people are simply thrilled opening a box containing a camera or lens.
You got very good advise from Ken Rockwell, the 70-300 VR is an excellent optic and it will serve you far better than the lens you had in mind to buy. I am not familiar with the P version, said to have a faster AF motor, not that I complain of the AF in my 70-300. There is another version without VR and I will skip that one no matter how cheap it could be.
The 70-300 VR will satisfy your needs to perfection. My answer is for the Nikon lenses.
Self absorption. I watch very few you tube videos.
You didn't mention your camera model but the AF-s 70-300 P lens is a sharp and lightweight lens with virtually instant focus. It will only work on the latest model bodies though.
I got this lens used $200 and after some months the Focus motor broke, fixed it for $180. I’m not sorry that I had to repair it, now I love this lens- fast, sharp, good color, quiet on any body I tried.

The OP switched to a used Nikon D300 after a consumer level Pentax K-50 failed him.
I had the same issue with a Pentax K-30, and purchased a new Pentax KP, which is compatible with their {fast}55-300mm PLM lens.
Oops! As Rehess noted I have a Nikon D300.
Rick
First not every lens in any focal length has the same issues, if your looking at a cheap 55-300 you get what you pay for. If you want a good 55-300 look to spend around 450 on up.

Please check the NikonUSA website for lens compatibility with your D300 and the "P" version of that lens. I do not recall for certain that the D300 has been updated for compatibility with "P" lenses. The older versions will work just fine in any case.
Okay, here's the alphabet soup;
The 55-300;
NIKON NIKKOR 55-300MM F/4.5-5.6 G ED DX AF-S VR AUTOFOCUS LENS
The 70-300;
NIKON NIKKOR 70-300MM F/4.5-5.6 G ED-IF AF-S VR AUTOFOCUS LENS
Yes, I know that the first is a DX lens and the second is an FX.

I am currently saving for the Nikon DX 70-300 VR and what I found in evaluations is in full agreement with "camerapapi" above.
I have a D5600 with the 18-55 DX VR and the 55-200 DX VR lenses.
I, too, will have to save a little longer, but that is better than buying one of the others now, then buying the DX 70-300 VR later.
Thank you "camerapapi" for confirming my decision!

Did I miss that in his original post or do you remember him saying that previously?
Dennis
I won't bemoan the K50 anymore. It's still usable with manual focus lenses and I keep a Sigma 600mm reflex lens mounted on it most of the time.
