Does anyone have a designated beneficiary for their photos, someone who who will know where they are, who will access them, how they will access them, who will care to access them? They’re not like cherished albums of prints in the closet. Some of us have thousands of photos stored for posterity. I have a couple thousand of what I consider "family" photos that I’m going to copy off for my two daughters into folders organized by year, but the rest may only have value to me. I’d like your thoughts about what your own general expectations are.

After reading a lot of the posts here , I agree with the common sentiment that most folks won’t care or have need for our photos. Yet I’ve been the beneficiary of a shutterbug Uncle and can also relate to the benefit of leaving printed photos behind for those who will come after my passing from this world.

I say this because in 2019 I finally stopped procrastinating delved into a collection of over 6,000 printed photos left to me buy my Uncle in 2010. I prepared photo albums for Christmas gifts for my 2 remaining brothers , 4 children. They were all arranged chronologically and cover all major events in their life. I added to each of them things I had collected, report cards, newspaper articles where they were photographed, seasonal ornaments that were constructed of paper /card stock. Etc , etc.

All the recipients were very grateful and there was a response I never expected……in the months before Christmas conversations would turn to what we are giving to others as gifts. I explained the project I was doing and the response was over the top excitement. The nearly universal response was how they wished they had pictures of their growing up years, a photographical account of their personal history.

I am very grateful and blessed to also have inherited the photo albums of my paternal family history from a scrapbook from the early 1900’s (including tin types from 1800’s), my maternal grandmothers photo album from the late 1800’s to 1960’s, my Uncle’s wedding album from the late 30’s, same for my parents from the mid 50’s, my Uncle’s photos from WW11 in Europe working in a tank destroyer unit, my Uncle’s childhood photo album.

Digital storage is great stuff and a useful tool but when we get together as a family, nothing beats passing around a photo album. I am slowly achieving my goal of identifying people in pictures so people will know who their relatives are and see the similarities in appearance. Thanks for bringing up this topic, KB

Forgot to ask........did anyone else use the "clinkers" for traction on snow and ice during the winter. Our neighborhood was full of alleys that ran behind homes, it was easy to spread a few shovels full "clinkers" out of the ash box that were located in the alley behind most every house. It was the job of the city garbage truck crew to shovel out the contents of the ash boxes into the back of the city garbage trucks. that occurred once a month during the heating season

Interesting tech for it's day. Surely the conversion to natural gas in this home brought a smile to all...no more coal to carry & stoke and no more coal dust to contend with. If anyone can confirm this.......is that large duct on the side of the furnace the cold air return ? Wondering if the motor and pulley was a conversion from the previously mentioned "gravity furnace" design.

I am very familiar with the "Octopus" furnaces that were prevalent in the midwest during the 50's & 60's
We suffered through with a tempermental oil burner/ hot water / radiator system

I appreciate all the responses....thank you
I simply inserted the SD card into the Apple reader, inserted the dongle feed to the lightning port and opened the photo app, activated the import function and it took all photos as I had selected “all photos” option.
Loaded quickly, but still no videos
thanks,

Hi' I'm looking for help and advice with Lake Superior and Lake Michigan.Next year in February or March myself and family are thinking to visit one of these lakes to see wildlife and most of all to see Whales.Have anyone on here live near these two lakes, or who have been there and spotted Whales in the Two Lakes. Thanks for reading.Mark

I love the humor, yet there is a very small sliver of truth to the claim of whales in Lake Superior. There is a group in Duluth that began the Whale rumor long ago and printed T-shirts with a logo promoting the Lake Superior Whale watchers club , my girlfriend ( who will remain as Jane Doe and has been on 4 north shore vacations ) actually got fooled into believing last summer there were whales and was awarded a new Shark watching club T-shirt to rub it in a little more.

If you are serious about vacationing in the midwest I suggest a October visit , the colors and the food will be excellent, start in Milwaukee ,head to LaCrosse , cross over the Mississippi there and take MN hwy 61 along the Mississippi river heading north up to 90/ 94 , head east to Eau Claire and take state hwy 10 into Green Bay, enjoy the beauty of Door County and then head up to the "UP" of Michigan over to St. Ignace and hop on the bridge to Mackinaw City , take the jet boat to Mackinaw Island and enjoy an auto free / bicycle only island, head south to Petoskey , enjoy some scratch Polish food there and head to Traverse City, do the Lake Leelanau loop and head south on M22 thru beautiful towns and some of it right along the eastern shore of Lake Michigan, head to Muskegon and take the high speed ferry back to Milwaukee. A credit card , and your favorite camera with extra batteries and your set. This trip is doable in 5 or 6 days with plenty of photo stops.

Given my travel for work I'm considering the Hassleblad Zoom camera Mod that attaches to the back of the Motorola X. Smart phone. I run across unique scenes often and quickly whipping out my regular camera isn't an option . Can anyone share their experience if they have one with this unit please.
Thanks !

Hi , I'm Kevin and am brand spanking new to the world of photography as a hobby. My intent is to purchase a camera that can easily be used for family photos ( soon to be a first time grandfather) and the many sights I see as I travel in my work. What little research I've done leads me to consider a mirror less camera with a large sensor and a lens that would fit it the casual novice hobbyist . The camera needs to be small enough to carry in a laptop bag as I travel for work often. My goal is to replicate the blessing I've been given of a pictorial family history for my extended family.
I want to spend the money to print photos for albums as presents etc, electronic sharing of photos would be the bonus but I want to get away from only cell phone images ( yes I know those can be printed but the quality seems lacking )
I've read some good reviews on Sony, Panasonic, Fuji et al but don't see myself well enough informed to make a decison just yet. And from what I've read on this forum there exist a lot of convictions about choice but what I'm seeking is the wisdom needed in making the decision for a newbie ........it appears wisdom abounds here.
Kind Regards, Kevin
