Hi, Yes. I have had this lens for a few months now and its fantastic. Much lighter than the 200-500mm, faster, and overall great to use. You have to remember its a prime lens and not a zoom. The only real downside is the cost $3,500+.

While I was shooting some pictures over the weekend, my LCD screen in my Nikon D7100 went blank. I can see a yellow line on the screen. I can not see the settings, or view pictures. I read an article on the web stating that it is common issue with Nikon camera. Does anyone know how much it will cost to repair it, and who I can send it to get it fix. Thanks!

That happened to my D500 and they had to replace the circuit board. Luckily it was under warranty.

I insure and list all my camera equipment and lenses, including my cell phone on my home owners insurance. My equipment is covered at all times for anything including stupidity if I break or lose something. On a side note I had a non US Nikon D750 that never gave me any problems. On I think the 4th recall I checked the serial number with Nikon. They put in a new shutter and recalibrated focus and updated the firmware at no charge in August 2017. I also have bought stuff advertised as grey market and when I received the item it came with all US papers and warranty (Sigma lens). Its all about the money and Nikon and all others gets paid the same no matter who sells the camera but they got to put on a show for dealers that are required to buy so much inventory. I just bought a new D500 US and a D850 non US. Check out the model number on a D850 sold by BestBuy or Walmart. I think it is listed #1585 same as grey market on some Ebay sites. I think it is a good idea to have insurance no matter the warranty. Just sharing some information and experience. I think if you call and ask if you can get warranty on a grey market item the answer will always be no. I also think warranty is done on a lot of it with no questions asked or any information given other than serial number. I might be wrong with my thinking but I am also going by experience. If it's insured all you need is a receipt showing you purchased.
I insure and list all my camera equipment and lens... (show quote)

Thank you Zeke. 🤗

That is why they are so eager to sell them. Seldom used - past danger point - so they tend to be very profitable.

Ok. Thanks. And the hope no more troubles.

That might mean it had a cold solder joint. A minor repair.

Thanks Walter. They said they are replacing the circuit board. Whatever that means. 😃

Exactly. Nothing you would have done is a likely cause. Btw, there may have been a repair delay because Nikon got a lot of failures back from the field and needed more.time and more tested parts to fix a bunch of returned cameras.

I tracked a case for a client years ago. Humidity in the circuit board plant was slightly off and was the likely cause of thousands of failures months later.

Thanks a bunch Steve. 👍🏻

That is why it's so profitable to sell extended warranty. The extended warranty doesn't cover the early phase and only cover the period where problem is least likely to happen.

I didn’t buy the extended warranty. Maybe be I should look into it. Thank you.

Yes indeed.... and, anyone can have a batch of "bad or early failure" boards in a production run.....bad boards are usually spotted early on, prior to or during assembly or test cycles, the early board failures can sting you once the product is "on the streets".

Thanks ole Mikey ! 😃

I have done QA in electronics. These days, with so much functionality on a chip, there are not many components so the left side of the bathtub curve tends to be less daunting. But as noted, slight assembly errors can cause shorts or local heating issues.

Thank you Steve. The camera has never been dropped and gets great care.

I just thought maybe it was something I did.

Sure, but I was thinking of initial manufacturing flaws, not the stuff WE cause by using the equipment.

Possibly... Or dust, dirt or sand maybe?

Yup, the left side of the failure rate bathtub curve.

Thank you Naja. I think I’ve had it for about 10 months. I’m glad it’s under warranty and hope that’s the end of my troubles.

I’ve read where others have had issues with their buttons be stuck. Not sure what caused that either.

I did not have the problem you experienced, but did have a somewhat related problem with my new D500 when it quit working with my Nikon flashes. The repair (under warranty) involved replacement of the main circuit board and the hot shoe.

There was no damage to the camera leading to that failure, and Nikon did not document what they felt was the cause. My conclusion is that these cameras are incredibly complex devices/systems built from a large number of highly sophisticated miniaturized components. With so much going on, it is just a statistical possibility that a small number of failures will occur.

The good news is that I have had zero problems since receiving my camera back from the repair center.

Thanks a bunch for your input Larry. I guess so. It’s just upsetting and now a black mark if I ever choose to sell it. 😪

Recently my D500, (still under warranty,) LCD screen went black. The metering window was also blank.

Plus and minus buttons on the left side were also stock.

All this and unfortunately happened right before my puffin trip!

I Had to rent a D500 from borrow lenses.com for my puffin trip, and I can tell you I wasn’t very happy about losing my gear for this trip.

After two weeks of waiting, they told me that the circuit board was bad.

Has anyone else had this problem? They didn’t explain how or why this happened.

Yikes. Lol. So can you recommend a good one that’s not too expensive ? I need 2 T storage
