I have it and it pretty much lives on my D500. When I first received it, I was concerned that I would have problems zeroing in on my subject since I'd never before owned a prime lens. My fears turned out to be unfounded. I am more than happy with this lens. BTW, my zoom of choice is the Tamron 150-600 G2. That lens now lives on my D7200.

I have the 200-500mm f/5.6 and get good results with it, but everything I see and hear says I should sell it and buy the 500mm f/5.6 PF.

The 500PF is a great lens, really lightweight and easy to hand-hold for action shots, such as birds in flight. Very sharp results, but that does depend on your ability to hand-hold if you are taking the shot that way. I got it a couple of months ago and have never used it on a tripod, although I did put it on the tripod a week or so ago but quickly took it off as I did not like that my motion was limited. Since I got it my 200-500 has not been put back on my D500.

Sounds wonderful, but $3,600, won't ever be in the camera budget. I'll just have to limp along with my ancient, ponderous ED 600 5.6 and AF S Nikkor 200-500 5.6 E ED with extender. In any case, out here I need all the reach I can get. A nominal 750 on the D7200 is point of entry - wouldn't get a good bit of what I get now with the 500 - a truly superb lens by all reports. No GAS though.

tcaa2267 was asking about the 500mm PF lens: "Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR Lens." My answer was to him. People were responding about the 200-500, which is a different lens. The 500 PF is expensive but also produces a very high quality image and it's really nice if lugging a larger lens around is not something people want to continue doing.

The 500 PF is a game-changer, a sharp 500mm lens easily used without a tripod. I’ve had mine for about six months, and now it is my primary birding lens on my D500. I have made some amazing captures, some of which I have shared on this forum. Although the maximum aperture is only 5.6, i have never felt challenged except when shooting right at dawn. The ONLY drawback that I have experienced comes in situations in which I am too close to the subject, in which case a zoom like the 200-500 would be preferable. If you need a lomg lens, and can afford it, this is a wonderful product.

By the way, the smaller 300 PF f4 is also a remarkable lens and only about half the cost of the 500 PF. With a 1.4x teleconverter, you get to 420 mm at f5.6, which could be long enough in many situations.

The Nikon 500mm f5.6E PF ED VR is as sharp as my Nikon 500mm f4. And yes, I have the 500 5.6 FL lens and it is fantastic. I shoot it off the D5, D850, and D500. They all return great images.
Below is just an example of it's sharpness. The lens is very easy to carry around and I like to shoot it wide open, most primes are sharp there. You will really like the lens.
Good luck and keep on shooting until the end.
Nikon D500, 500mm FL lens, 1/1000 sec. at 5.6, ISO 1000. Roseate Spoonbill, south central Florida.

There was some bad copies of this lens out there. If you can't get any at all sharp photos not once, send it back & ask for a refund.
Post some examples. maybe someone could help. I use the 200 - 500 on a D810. Works great in good light & even better on larger subjects (deer/ egrets) & even better on larger subjects in good light. In Low light, like in shaded areas on a cloudy day etc. , on small birds, the combo struggles to pull focus & hunts a lot. Even when it stops hunting, the image quality can be disappointing at times. Steve Perry has some good vids out there on you tube & moose peterson has a sharpness series also. Maybe these vids will help.

Originally I couldnt get my hands on one so I settled for the 20-500. I was finally able to locate a 500mm 5.6 at ProCam.com when New York was months away from delivering.....Weight wise it is close to the 70-200 & not much longer. (I didnt like the 200-500 specifically when fully extended with the hood on). The 500 is tack sharp. My targets (Rocket launches) are typically 2-3 miles away). I have used the Nikon TC 1.4 & 1.7 with it without issue. Attached is a shot i took of the SpaceX manned launch back in June from roughly 2 miles off.

I got my 500 PF f/5.6 about nine months ago and I find it living up to the superlatives that have been assigned to it. It can be used hand held without issue or on a monopod or tripod with ease. I have mine on a D500. Yes, it is expensive but it is a pleasure to use and well worth the money, at least to me. I rarely use my Tamron 100-400 these days even though despite it’s low cost is still a very capable and light lens. The 500 PF is a permanent fixture on the D500. Good luck!
