You may be right...I'm not that familiar with hawks. I googled NC hawks and to me he looked like a Cooper's Hawk.

Yeah that's a red shouldered hawk. Adult.
Compare patterns on wings and tail here to your last pic. also notice reddish brown "shoulders" .
i live in northern Illinois. We don't see many of them.
Pretty cool.

I really don't think that's a Coop. It looks more like a red-shouldered.

Where I live, in Illinois about maybe 40 species including ducks, hawks and birds of prey comprise 95 percent of what you see.

Just a tip. 1/2000 of a second is the magic shutterspeed to avoid motion blur. Most of the 70-300mm I’ve encountered. Are noticeably sharper and have less chromatic aberration 1 stop down from wide open usually f8. I use those settings and let auto iso adjust exposure.

I think the most interesting part of this photo is the warm light touching the beach steps. In fact, sorry to say, but the whole left side of the scene doesn't do much for me.

Yeah, I have a bunch of crops on my desktop. I get that too, but it looks crowded to me if I crop it out. Probably something to think about more in camera.

Maybe you are right. Better?:

Could not sleep this morning. So...
Another sunrise shot over the big pond (Lake Michigan). I got on location late due to a detour. No time to set up.
So I just shot hand held. This one was WAY under exposed.I just started messing with it in LR. Turned out to be the best composition in my opinion.
Edits were straightening the horizon, I seemed to have lost that skill in camera. Slight increase in vibrance. Picked up the shadows, and cloned out a nasty lens flare which seems to happen a lot with my Tokina 11-16mm f2.8. I think I have a hair of the texture slider going. Trying to avoid the HDR look.
I was going to crop out the painted "no diving signs" on the path but decided against it. Since the wide scene looked better to me, and they are there. It 's actually part of our lakefront. A hint of realism.
I am starting to accumulate pics of that same scene, all morning shots and they all look different.

I am standing in Chicago and that background is Indiana and way in the horizon there are steel mills.

My 80-200mm f4.5 is ridiculously sharp and zooms and focuses SO smooth. Great lens.

I have a late 2012 mac mini. 2.5 i5 paid $600 for a refurb at OWC. I had them swap out the drive for a 7200 rpm 1TB.
later on I upgraded the RAM to 16 gigs. Did that myself for like 50 bucks.
This thing has worked fine for what I use it for, browsing the web and doing light duty in LR Classic. I bet I could get 300 bucks for it no problem, maybe more but I won't because it works great. I turn it on and it works great, EVERY SINGLE TIME. I've never had a single bug with it and it's been a total champ for 5 years now. It's the first computer I can say that about.

Ok so we mostly know that all marketing is mainly chasing the 18 to 35 year old demographic. And we see that for less serious imaging, that group uses phones.

Given the above, why doesn’t the photo industry marketing bunch realize that entry level fancy cameras are for old farts and therefore should be waaaaay less confusing to use yet still appearing to be advanced gear.

Hasta look like advanced gear cuz that tells other old farts “I still got all my marbles. I can use this pro camera” ... even tho it’s obviously less than true.

I think entry level DSLRS like the Nikon D3xxx and Canon Rebels are going to disappear.

Man I wish I could afford an XT-3 or a 4 and some glass. What a beautiful camera.

Im not making any statement about which camera is better, but am curious about the large amount of questions here from Nikon users, about basic things....

I think it an age thing. Seems like a lot of old folk here.
99% of all technical photography questions could be answered ad nauseam on You Tube.
It's as if they haven't even figured out how to use a search engine.

Yes I'm aware of what a telephoto lens does. I doubt atmospheric refraction would do all this to the moon.
The fact the moon does not look this big in real life (or that color) means the pic is manipulated, ie fake. Whether with a zoom lens, or Photoshop, or white balance is off, it is anything but real. It is WAY more fake than taking a picture of a store after asking the owner to turn on/off the lights. It can be assumed fake long before noticing the cloud position, and there's nothing wrong with that, no need to get excited, imo.

This guy having a mental battle over having a truck move out of his way vs asking lights be turned off at a store he's photographing will be in mental anguish until he learns to relax a bit.

More than likely (hopefully) his position is grossly exaggerated because he's making a video on the subject.
Yes I'm aware of what a telephoto lens does. I do... (show quote)

Glad to see the word fake being used.
You and I know it's (the moon pic) a fake because we fancy ourselves as photographers. Avereage schmoe. Probably not.

Your last statement might be true, but I am kind of suprised that in that whole video you fixed on that. Guy is running around shooting medium and large format film. He's trying to document real things and set a standard for himself. I thought it was a pretty good discussion.
I dont think I would let the store owner know either because he might changed something else also.
Thought that garbage can thing also was wise.

You ever see a landscape with a rock or something in the foreground and on the rock, a leaf positioned perfectly. ? The first thing in your head....he put that there.
