Im not making any statement about which camera is better, but am curious about the large amount of questions here from Nikon users, about basic things... I am wondering if there are more novice photographers here and what they use ... I know I am stirring up a hornets nest, and just for the record I use both...
I see photos on line or on T.V. of pros at events with their Canon cameras and their white long zooms, with only a few other cameras.. Am I making a wrong conclusion, that most pros use Canon and novice hobbies use other brands... I also am aware of Sony, & how popular they are getting.. Now more than 2 choices......
Not sure how I can asses if there are more Canon users than other brands...

A lot of SPORTS photographers use Canon but that seems to be the only bias between the big 2.

Interesting observance. I hadnt noticed more basic.Nikon user questions than with other camera users.
I have noticed that there is generally a lot more canon equipment for sale than Sony or Nikon on the various social sellers markets. I have no idea of the significance of that, either.

I don't know Lee as I am a Nikon user but I rarely asked questions. Often if I have a question it went unanswered. But I do noticed that there are many question from Nikon users than Canon users. Perhaps Nikon does better than Canon in the lower and cameras and thus more people own them. One thing that Nikon lenses are really a mess with so many different variations and many compatibility issues and thus it can confuse a lot of users.
Nikon has the pre AI lenses which are basically not compatible to any DSLR but many people can use them on the lower end DSLR. The AI/AI-s lenses which meter with only the higher end Nikon. The AF lenses that don't have built in motor can only AF with higher end cameras. The E type lenses which are only compatible with the D3 or newer. The AF-P lenses which have some incompatibility problems with older Nikon's.

I guess it depends where you look. I suppose someone is buying up the discarded Canons as folks clamor for Nikon and Sony cameras.

I am sure we will all have a lot of input from our group and this will add to what we know... I have found that a lot of photographers sell their cameras to up grade... But with high end there seems to me to be little canon cameras for sale.. Seems its more for an upgrade than preference of manufactures.... Many start out with low end cameras and like you and me purchase higher end cameras as our needs change. Im locked into Canon because of the amount of canon lenses I have that won't work with other manufactures..

Did you see the article about the stockpile of Canon and Nikon cameras that were on hand at the 2018 Winter Olympics? It's incredible how many cameras and lenses were there for pros to use. It looks like pro photographers were using both. Take a look at this link:

Don't jump to conclusions based on what you see as Canon White Lenses :)

Who cares?
The first camera you bought; why did you buy it? Because someone else told you it was better? As long as the camera meets YOUR requirements, feels good in your hands and meets your "price" requirements and you did your own research.....who cares?
I know Canon users who switched to Nikon/Sony/Pentax and others.
I know Nikon uses who switched to Canon/Sony/Pentax and others.
Who cares?
As long as that person is happy and the camera does what they want it to do, who cares?

Could it be that Canon offered to the news agencies a better price then Nikon?

A coupla things...

On the pro scene, at least among my friends and business acquaintances I see the balance leaning slightly toward Nikon among news photographers, slightly toward Canon among sports and "action" photographers, and just about 50/50 among "art" type professional photographers. I also notice a growing Sony presence in all of these groups, especially the latter.

It looks to me as though Sony is on the rise in all segments, and that I see far fewer Pentax than their quality should deserve.

On the amateur side, I think the balance swings toward Nikon among the crop sensor / APS cameras I see at popular tourist sites and around town, college campuses, etc., which might be reflective of the number of Nikon newbie questions seen on the Hog. In most respects, I think it's a legacy issue - I remember my youth where there were Ford Families, GM Clans, and Mopar Tribes.

The obvious answer is -----

OF COURSE NOT

And I have the photos to prove it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PS: Over the many years no matter what brand of camera I have used - That camera was a better camera than I was a PHOTOGRAPHER

Again, it's not the camera, it's the photographer and his/her vision. How many times do we have a "spiffy" comeback about a good cook must have good pots and pans, but then we get all wrapped up in branding.

I started out as a die hard Canon user, because that's what I had. When my mentor passed away, he left me a lot of Nikon gear (lenses, digital and film bodies... partially as a joke) I switched because I now had more Nikon quality stuff than Canon stuff.

I've known about the Nikon gray lenses for a long time. To me, it was about as big a deal as when they started offering DSLR's in red/yellow, etc. Don't care, and surely wouldn't pay more for something that's just a tool. There are those out there that will only buy a "Stanley" brand hammer, when any hammer will do.

Good luck with your quest to "prove to whoever???" that Canon users are smarter than Nikon users. The main thing is, that people who pray at the alter of any brand of any tool, are the ones that are not too smart. You just need the camera body/lens combination that will capture your vision, regardless of brand.

Decades ago when cameras used film and lenses were only manual focus, Nikon was known as the camera for professionals as they would take more abuse and were a bit more weatherproof than Canon. Professionals required reliability. I started with a Canon AE-1 as it was recommended as an enthusiast's camera by my local photography store. Today, I believe they are pretty much equivalent with Nikon having advantages in some areas and Canon in others. Don't think you can go wrong with either one. Big question now is DSLR vs mirrorless. Will Sony make better mirrorless cameras than Nikon and Canon?

I believe an increasing number of UHH members are quietly adding Fuji cameras to their bags. Just sayin’...

Bkyser... If you read my OP I am not trying to prove anything.... Nothing at all!!!! [Quote]"Im not making any statement about which camera is better", Im curious about what others here and in the field pro as well as consumers use. It is provocative to suggest anything other than that!! This is not intended to be an argument but a discussion and query!!! I definitely am not trying to prove Canon users are pros and Nikons are not!!!!! Actually I am very interested in those that have Sony.....
