I am sure we will all have a lot of input from our group and this will add to what we know... I have found that a lot of photographers sell their cameras to up grade... But with high end there seems to me to be little canon cameras for sale.. Seems its more for an upgrade than preference of manufactures.... Many start out with low end cameras and like you and me purchase higher end cameras as our needs change. Im locked into Canon because of the amount of canon lenses I have that won't work with other manufactures..

Many of our posters here on UHH are new to photography and use entry-level cameras many of which are Nikon.

My first SLR was an Exakta. Around 1970 my wife bought a Nikon. She was advised by the photographer at work. I used my Exakta and she used her Nikon for a while until she lost interest and I took over the Nikon. Had a couple Nikon lenses. A friend had a D70 and I decided to get into digital so I continued with Nikon. Still using Nikon but I have a larger pile of bodies and equipment now. Plus software (not Nikon).

Do you have statistics to share? I think not. I tend to notice Nikon questions. I never respond to Canon questions even though I have one Canon camera. Same for Sony even though I have two Sonys. I do respond to Nikon because I mostly shoot with that brand. As for your interest in Sony, I sometimes use a Sony A7r for pole shots mostly because it's lighter.

Canon and Nikon are both extensively being used by pro photographers. Sony's new A9 is supposed to compete head to head with the Canon EOS-1D X Mk.II and Nikon D5. I don't think that Sony is really being used that much by pro photographers. In these articles you only see Canons and Nikons being used. These are some of the photos from the cameras and lenses being used at the 2018 Winter Olympics.

Im not making any statement about which camera is better, but am curious about the large amount of questions here from Nikon users, about basic things... I am wondering if there are more novice photographers here and what they use ... I know I am stirring up a hornets nest, and just for the record I use both...
I see photos on line or on T.V. of pros at events with their Canon cameras and their white long zooms, with only a few other cameras.. Am I making a wrong conclusion, that most pros use Canon and novice hobbies use other brands... I also am aware of Sony, & how popular they are getting.. Now more than 2 choices......
Not sure how I can asses if there are more Canon users than other brands...

I've noticed the same thing. Who knows why, but I think that many on this forum are "older" and probably started with Nikon when Nikon was king and have been loyal to the brand ever since, even though Canon was probably a better choice for a while. I don't think that's true now.

I also see more entry level Nikons in the big box stores, and I see a lot of confused people on this forum who apparently bought one of them.

And that should be the case with just about everything, including a life partner.

I've been with Nikon since the FM/FE combo gave me a lightweight system with a multiple- exposure lever on it. (That was the deal-breaker with Canon at the time, their AE-1 didn't have one.) For those who assume a pre-AI lens won't work on a modern Nikon, right now my un-AI'd 50mm f2 H Nikkor is working just fine on my D750.

When I was in the Navy, I bought a Canon AE-1 at the Ship's Store and have stayed since the 60's. At 72 now, I was able to see most of my Canons, except for an 80D and I bought a Sony RX10 IV, I like that face that the Sony is so much lighter and I only need the lens on the camera. I did own a Nikon P900 for a while and I found the images fantastic.

Right now top pros are using slightly more Canon gear than Nikon, but widely using both. But watch out there is a new 1000 lb. gorilla in the room, Sony. Sony has just achieved the world #1 in sales of full frame cameras, over Nikon and Canon, with Sony's sales of its A9, A7RIII, A7SII, A7III and all its other A7 series fullframe cameras. .

Canon still leads by a big margin in OVERALL camera sales, but the market is swinging to mirrorless cameras away from DSLRs. Sony has announced its corporate goal of being the new overall world #1 camera seller by 2020 with sales of its fullframe, APS-C and compact mirrorless cameras. . Don't scoff at this, Sony has the resources, the tech and the corporate will to make it happen. Every day more and more pros, like myself, are switching to Sony professional fullframe mirrorless cameras. I was a top pro Nikon and Canon user for 40 years, yes 40, and switched to Sony fullframe mirrorless back in January 2017 and have never looked back.

Nikon and Canon are now spending millions to develop their own pro fullframe mirrorless systems. they should be announced by Photokina this fall, but probably wont be ready for production until 2019. In the meantime, Sony has also achieved the single #1 selling fullframe camera in the world with its stunning A7III which bests ALL Canon and Nikon cameras in its $2000 price range. Sony took this #1 fullframe camera title away from the excellent $3300 Nikon D850 DSLR. Both the Sony A7III and Nikon D850 are selling fast worldwide and are back-ordered in many places.

Well, I have both Canon and Nikon and they are not the latest models. Us pore, retired folks can't afford to go buying every new model that comes out. Might I add that I have also been using an Olympus for the past 20 years. It has to be retired now because it has developed problems and is not worth what it would cost to repair it. I reckon I could give it a nice funeral and bury it in a nice coffin. Then in a thousand years an archeologist could discover it and it would be priceless.

After film days my good friend who was a,professional photographer that was a Nikon user . I bought my camera d7100 and after a 18-200,70-300 100mm prime and a 50-500 plus all the periferal equipment, I was married to Nikon. It would be cheaper to get rid of my wife than change brands

Switching is not economical for many, but if the new Nikon mirrorless system will allow you to use your present Nikon lenses, then you should consider moving to that Nikon mirrorless system for all the distinct advantages of mirrorless, Cheers.

BTW I changed wives and it would have been cheaper to just change camera systems than getting rid of my wife. lol

"Im not making any statement about which camera is better", Im curious about what others here and in the field pro as well as consumers use. It is provocative to suggest anything other than that!! This is not intended to be an argument but a discussion and query!!! I definitely am not trying to prove Canon users are pros and Nikons are not!!!!! Actually I am very interested in those that have Sony.....

Your exact quote says otherwise "Am I making a wrong conclusion, that most pros use Canon and novice hobbies use other brands"

I've been shooting weddings, and doing portrait work for 33 years, and at times make 100% of my income from photography, sometimes less than 50%, but I've used both, why worry about who uses what. If you don't have access to the exif info, you won't have a clue what was used. For all you know, it could have been done with a cell phone.
