I am not a birder. Never have been. Don't dislike birds. I love to listen to them. Just don't know much about them and can't shoot them for love nor money! But at the BTA, I've found a water feature that they seem to like. So I usually go sit there for awhile to see what I can find. This time I found a few little ones. I need names, if you could give them. I know these aren't wonderful images, but they're the best I can do. (I usually get black blobs or dots!) Handheld with a 70-300 lens. Trouble was, I had been shooting cactus which move at the rate of 1/4" each 100 years, so I had a slow shutter speed for the first many. Topaz to the rescue!

Anyway, enjoy. And help me with names if you can.

This little one apparently lives on my porch. S/He's around nearly all day every day.

First one's name is 'Bill.' 'Liz' is featured in your final shot. The names of those shown in the shots between are 'Gladys,' 'Spike,' and 'Sammy,' but not necessarily in that order.

I seldom shoot birds either, Kathy. But for reasons unknown to me, for some weeks now, a ravenous pack of sparrows have been terrorizing the rose bushes just off my front deck. So today, I grabbed a camera and got some shots that aren't half as good as yours.

Thanks. I have a birder friend in Lubbock who might also know. I figure between the experts here and him, I'll get the info.

Good work, Kathy! Not being a birder, I have no tips to offer.

Hi Kathy,
I am not positive, but I believe 1) Says Phoebe, 2 & e) Cardinals, 4) Lesser goldfinch, 5) House Finch & 6) I believe is a Warbling Vireo. #1 is a bit dark and I can't see the underside, the the shape & back color look like a Says Phoebe.

Keep at it.

Jim

Thank you so much, Jim. My knowledge of small birds would fit on a pin. Other than colours, I know nothing.

And by the way, that bird on my railing is all the same colour - sort of a brownish grey. I don't think the belly is a different colour. But then, I could be wrong.

This time, no foolin' Kathy. For some years, I had the pleasure of knowing and spending time with a Really Knowledgeable Photographer/Birder. The guy was actually sort of famous, at least regionally, and bookmakers like Roger Torrey Peterson and such sent him requests for pictures of this bird or that bird for their various bird books. From that noted person I learned much, and among the things I learned from him was there is such a thing as an LGB. As in 'Little Gray Bird.'

Couldn't say whether or not that's what sort of bird you've got there on your railing --his teaching and my learning weren't exactly a 1:1 match-- but mebby its related to an LGB.

I'm adding in another one. I forgot it when I was posting. I honestly couldn't believe my eyes when I saw this guy standing up on the top of the mountain! He was VERY far away - much too far for my 300.

What on earth is he doing on the top of a mountain in the middle of a desert?

Is that somehow connected to Lady Bird's DYF? There are an awful lot of DYF's in this world!
