i love all those little birdies, kathy, but what i'd really like to find out is about the birdbath. is that
birdbath made from a big stump?

It does look like wood, no? It's actually a stone water feature. The water bubbles up very slightly in the center, but keeps the top full. It runs down the sides a bit for recollection and a lot when someone splashes it. I think it looks quite natural to the birds, because they apparently like it.

I agree - Great Blue Heron.

That's sort of what I figured. Between him being a LONG ways away and my bad eyes, I'm never sure of anything.

You already have some correct responses on the bird ID's; but I had to laugh. Back in 2012 I started back in on my old hobby of photography, except this was DSLR vs.the old SLR. In my film days, I shot mostly landscapes. By the time I started back with a DSLR, I lived at the southern tip of NJ - birds everywhere!! So, I started shooting birds. Nice, but I had no idea as to the species names, etc. A neighbor is the ranger at our State Park, so I started pestering him for the names of the birds I shot. He finally told me there were books on the subject that I might find educational and helpful. I started hanging out with other local bird photographers and soaked up everything they were willing to teach me. Fast forward a few years, and now I'm the one who can usually correctly answer questions about shore bird ID's, plus go on ad nauseam regarding their habits. Still working on the smaller song bird species, but getting there. Fair warning - birds are usually very addictive!! Get a longer lens.

They ARE fun. So cute - particularly the little guys. I have difficulty even seeing a bird when I can hear it, let alone getting it in the frame! Most of my "bird" pictures are actually black blobs. My friend in Texas has a website he goes to to get info and to report his findings. I should probably get that link from him again.

Good work Kathy, a nice variety of little birdies whatever they are. The Great Blue Heron is on look out!!

Thanks, Sylvia. There was a nice variety there. I don't think I had ever seen baby cardinals before. The heron certainly looks like he's either guarding something or looking for something. He stood there motionless for as long as I wanted to watch him.

Check out Merlin bird app for phone. Does pretty good in identifying birds. I wish there was a desktop version. Bit of a pain, Take pic of bird with camera, then take pic with phone of image on computer monitor. Or I guess one can transfer the pic to your phone, but seems so slow. At any rate, the Merlin app usually does a good job with identifying the bird.

It is very well done. It has been installed a long time. I'm sure weathering has helped.

I enjoy watching little birds but I’m not very good at identifying either. These are cute shots!

Just a tip. 1/2000 of a second is the magic shutterspeed to avoid motion blur. Most of the 70-300mm I’ve encountered. Are noticeably sharper and have less chromatic aberration 1 stop down from wide open usually f8. I use those settings and let auto iso adjust exposure.

Where I live, in Illinois about maybe 40 species including ducks, hawks and birds of prey comprise 95 percent of what you see.
