The bird on top of the mountain is some kind of heron - possibly a Great Blue.

Thanks, Elliott. I assumed it was a heron from its shape. But what on earth was it doing there!?

I am not a birder. Never have been. Don't dislike birds. I love to listen to them. Just don't know much about them and can't shoot them for love nor money! But at the BTA, I've found a water feature that they seem to like. So I usually go sit there for awhile to see what I can find. This time I found a few little ones. I need names, if you could give them. I know these aren't wonderful images, but they're the best I can do. (I usually get black blobs or dots!) Handheld with a 70-300 lens. Trouble was, I had been shooting cactus which move at the rate of 1/4" each 100 years, so I had a slow shutter speed for the first many. Topaz to the rescue!

Anyway, enjoy. And help me with names if you can.

Good start (and a good naming convention too)...... it starts out like what you posted......then a little further up the road you look at your gear and there are several big ole honkin lenses that have found their way home......and the little birdies grow bigger in the pictures! Enjoy the ride, it's addictive!!!!

I know what you mean about lenses. My friend in Texas brought his new lens with him last we were together. It's HUGE! I don't even know its length, but he gets amazing stuff with it. If I were a birder, I'd likely indulge. As it is, 300 is enough for me and my occasional forays into birding. And thanks.

Your shots are very good, but if you are going to be at all serious about birds, you need a longer lens, I use a 150-500mm on a crop (1.5x) sensor camera. Even then I need to crop most of the time.

You already have some correct responses on the bird ID's; but I had to laugh. Back in 2012 I started back in on my old hobby of photography, except this was DSLR vs.the old SLR. In my film days, I shot mostly landscapes. By the time I started back with a DSLR, I lived at the southern tip of NJ - birds everywhere!! So, I started shooting birds. Nice, but I had no idea as to the species names, etc. A neighbor is the ranger at our State Park, so I started pestering him for the names of the birds I shot. He finally told me there were books on the subject that I might find educational and helpful. I started hanging out with other local bird photographers and soaked up everything they were willing to teach me. Fast forward a few years, and now I'm the one who can usually correctly answer questions about shore bird ID's, plus go on ad nauseam regarding their habits. Still working on the smaller song bird species, but getting there. Fair warning - birds are usually very addictive!! Get a longer lens.

Yeah, I know. But, honestly, this is play, not serious work. My 300 does just fine for the serious stuff I do. Thanks.
