Fellow UHHer's,

I am in the market for a good quality photo printer (I am sure this question has come up before), I would prefer Inkjet instead of Laser. Price range should be under $300. Thanks in advance....

Having sold laptops for almost 20 years, I would suggest the following:
- 16GB Ram
- separate graphics processor with 4GB Ram (not shared system ram)
- memory based hard drive (much faster, more reliable)
- 15.6 inch screen (highest resolution possible in your budget)
- HDMI port for external flat screen when not going mobile
- Intel i7 core processor (again if it fits the budget)
Brands (order of recommendation):
- Panasonic Toughbook 54 series (pricey but extremely reliable)
- ACER (several different models)
- Lenovo

You will notice I didn't include DELL or HP, that's because they don't make their own
laptops, they are manufactured in Taiwan by a third party and then assembled here
in the U.S. (This can cause quality control/reliability issues).

Hope this is helpful.

Almost forgot to mention all the Civil War History around the Maryland and Virginia areas (Antietum, Gettysburg, Bull Run) to name a few. Also Great Falls National Park (Maryland side) is pretty nice for viewing and some photo ops. You can get fairly close to the wilder portion of the Potomac River there. Sometimes you can even see some of the best kayakers in the world working the rapids. The Natioanl Zoo is good for animal photos ( even Panda Bears). Souch too see. I would suggest buying a touring book from AAA.

Can't say anything about Indy but DC is my home town. Besides the mall from the Capital/Washington Monument/Lincoln Memorial you also have some of the finest museums in the world (Smithsonians) which are free to the public and summer time provides longer viewing hours. There are also many things to see off the mall (Air and Space Museum next to Dulles Airport for example). Be prepared to do a LOT of walking. Also, summer can be not only hot here in DC but also VERY humid, so pack and dress accordingly. Check out the Holocost Museum if you have the time it is a very moving. experience. Just a few thoughts.

I would wait until later in the year as there are so many new all electric models coming out.

If you happen to go through Massachusettes on the way, check out a little town named Turners Falls. Its quite scenic.

Check into Toshiba or Hitachi units. Many of the laptop manufacturers use these.

I have been selling and sipporting laptops since 1995. I would recommend Panasonic Toughbooks (CF-54). But due to your price limitations I would recommend looking at ACER. Good value and decent quality. Just make sure you get at least 8GB of ram. Stick with 5400rpm hard drives as they are not as sensitive to getting moved/b in mped around. Memory is the key thpugh.

Stay away of Lenovo. Poor quality control. Stick with Dell OR of you need to use the laptop outdoors then consider Panasonic Toughbook (model 53 or 54).

Several things to remember when getting a new laptop. First, always make sure the unit has a discreet graphics processor (better for processing photos, art, etc). Second, minimum 8GB of RAM (preferably more if the budget will allow), last but not least, find a manufacturer who designs and manufactures their own laptops. Companies like Dell and HP do not design and build their own units so sometimes you run into warranty repair issues as well as inconsistent engineering issues (ie, recent HP Lithium ION Battery problems). Even though they are more expensive check out the Panasonic Toughbook products (CF-54 series), they are engineered by Panasonic as well as manufactured by them. They are durable and good for travelling.
