I do not understand why this is significant to any but the few who are pushing their equipment to the limit.

While mirrorless is the future, my D5600 still exceeds my capability. That is good, because I will never be able to afford a kit of four-digit pieces.

Thanks to the internet (.pdf articles and YouTube videos), learning is a much more cost-effective alternative!

Which do you like?

What kind of photography?
For wildlife or even landscapes, #3 is great. Otherwise, I like #1.

Many of you who read my comments know that I'm not a gear nut. I've always believed two things:

Mind over matter — Your photographic knowledge and experience are more important than the hunk of junk in front of your face.

Use the right tool for the job — Don't drive screws with a hammer. Sometimes you do need specialty gear.

Emily at Micro Four Nerds just released a video that is worth watching, and makes my point FAR better than I can. I'll link it below.

A bit of introduction — Emily Lowrey is a professional photographer in the UK. She does a lot of event work like weddings and has a YouTube channel that covers all things Micro Four Thirds and Lumix. Emily's been at it for decades, and knows her stuff. She sells all kinds of Lightroom presets, if you're into that sort of thing.

Most importantly, she cuts through the crap to get to the heart of an issue and lay the cards on the table. So before you think you need a new Whosawhatchit D7590 with four lenses to go on your next adventure, watch the video linked in the post below. It made my day.

I agree. Upgrades should be driven by capability needs. And, as pointed out in the video, cell phone camera evolution and convenience can satisfy more and more photo needs.

The future is mirrorless, but when does one need it. DSLR development has probably reached its plateau making it more difficult for manufacturers to identify new upgrades worth the cost of upgrading. Mirrorless, on the other hand, will have new/improved capabilities even when backward capability is maintained (e.g., lenses). Look at how fast any DSLR series (e.g., (Nikon D5000) advanced.

Worst case will be when one purchases an upgrade without a defined need and then the next model will satisfy that need.

I suspect most of us are amateurs and hobbyists. A few are professionals who can not only purchase the newest and greatest but can justify it as a business expense and tax write-off. While I do envy that, I enjoy their opinions, especially when they vary. I often learn the most from those with whom I disagree.

I like to use the ‘soft shutter release buttons’ on my older, Nikon cameras — such as the FM2n or FE2. The kind that screw into the shutter buttons. BUT, they do have a nasty habit of becoming unscrewed, then lost. And, they do cost to replace.
So, my question is whether someone has a good way to secure them so they do not so easily unscrew themselves, yet are not so glued in that they can not be readily removed when desired?
Any thoughts that have worked for you are welcome.

Possible low-tech solution.

An archery solution to keep arrow tips screwed into the shafts is to put a small amount of string wax on the thread. Just a tad as it works up the threads as the tip is screwed in. Works good for arrows, but no idea if it works for cameras.

Comments welcome if anyone has something similar.

I dried out my cell phone in rice. Worked fine. Seems to be a common practice among cell phone users.

I've been using a "borrowed" Nikon from my brother for over a year.

The Nikon is a 3400 dsl. I enjoy the camera, but I think I'd like to
move up, just a bit. At first I was saving up to buy the 5700, but I can see that there
are some nice features in the 5600.
This camera would save me a few hundered dollars, that I can put towards a better
telephoto lens.

The reviews are all over the map for the 5600. Does anyone know if there are any
(real issues), against buy the 5600?
I'd appreciate any positive or negative feed back.
I am (far from) being a professional photographer, but have enjoyed photography
and the art of capturing shots, since 1963.

Thanks

Nikon announced the D5600 is the end of the D5000 series long ago -- but the D5600 is still in production. I don't think my demands will ever surpass it. Look at how fast Nikon progressed through the D5000 series.

I upgraded from D3000 -- which was really a predecessor of the D3XXX series. When I upgraded, the D3500 was just coming out and has many of the same capabilities as the D5600. One thing the D5600 does is time-lapse but neither do focus stacking in the camera. For me, the tie-breaker was the fully articulated screen. Since I have no need a full frame camera or 45 megapixels, I would probably skip the D7000 series for a D500 if I ever upgrade -- but at a significant price jump.

Good reasons for mirrorless and for full frame will be cited by others and should be considered.

You are on the right track by identifying your needs. If there was really one best camera for everyone, there would not be so many choices.

As for AI, the bar is pretty low for a generation that can not do basic math functions without a calculator!

I have a few Nikon lenses that I no longer use. I hate for good equipment to just sit while someone else could enjoy it. All are in excellent shape. Which companies are currently paying well while offering good service? I haven’t seen this on a UHH thread for a year or two.

I have only purchased three items recently; one new from my a local store and two used on UHH. I was pleased with both.

In both cases, I established PM with seller to ensure a clear mutual understanding. In one case, providing complete contact data was a factor. The seller had a typo in my e-mail address and called to find out why e-mails failed to deliver. If I had not included phone, I may not have been able to purchase.

It's like contracting. If some detail is not defined by either party, it may not be an oversight. If it is an oversight, it is easily clarified.

I use e-bay but only for certain items (e.g. books defined by ISBN) not photography.

I have about 40000 photos in several folders on my computer, what is the best way for back up? I want to keep them as same folder system.

I removed two 750GB 2.5" hard drives from a laptop I replaced. I bought two hard drive enclosures on Amazon (about $10. each) with USB 3 connector.

Good Morning Hoggers,

About 2 months ago a bear demolished my bird feeder. Based upon animal control recommendations, I'm now ready to reinstall a new feeder and need a recommendation on a trail camera so I can monitor the feeder at night. I haven't felt the need for a trail camera before so I have no idea what features I need, or what the options are (color/B&W, mounting options, storage capacity, how to download images, angle of view, etc).

I would intend to mount the camera on one of the posts on my front porch and the feeder will be about 20 feet away. I've attached a couple of photos of the demolished feeder if that helps you.

Thanks in advance,

Dave
